- Counterparts - Camila Meza - April 28th 2022
We have a special Thursday show! We are so excited to have the amazing Camila Meza on the show! https://camilameza.com/home
Meza is musically inspired by jazz guitarists like George Benson and Pat Metheny as well as being influenced by South American music and folk, she first studied with Jorge Vidal and Jorge Díaz. Increasingly oriented to Claudia Acuña from the mid-2000s she worked on the jazz scene of her hometown, where her first recording Giovanni Cultrera, Espinoza y Cia (Navidad en Jazz) was released in 2005. In 2007 she presented her debut album Skylark (Stateside).
In 2009 Meza moved to New York to study guitar at The New School with Peter Bernstein, Vic Juris and Steve Cardenas. Since then she also has worked on the New York jazz scene with Ryan Keberle (Into the Zone, 2014), Lucas Pino, Fabian Almazan and directs her own jazz octet, The Nectar Orchestra. She recorded for Sunnyside Records the album Traces (2016, with Shai Maestro, Matt Penman, Kendrick Scott, Bashiri Johnson, Jody Redhage, Sachal Vasandani), sings Spanish and English, and won two Independent Music Awards as the Best Adult Contemporary Album and Best Latin Song ("Para Volar"). Also on the albums Find the Common, Shine a Light by Ryan Keberle and Sounds from the Deep Field by Bryan Copeland she seemed outstanding in the opinion of the critics.
As a singer she can also be heard on Carolina Calvache's Ballad "La Última Vez". In 2017 the Camila Meza Quartet performed at the Festival Jazzahead. The following year she brought Gina Schwarz as part of her Pannonica project, Porgy & Bess in Vienna. Meza was nominated in the category of guitarist and female singer as a Rising Star in the critics poll of the Down Beat in 2018
Nate Chinen described Meza's vocals as "an appealing combination of lightness and depth, that sings with a bright, clear voice against the agile uproar of a world-class band." in The New York Times. The discographer Tom Lord lists them between 2005 and 2015 with participation in eight recording sessions.

55 min - Counterparts - Mike Stanlaw - April 26th 2022I’ve lived in Bayonne my whole life, and I’ve been into health and fitness since I was 15 years old. The weights were something my Dad showed me as a kid, and I instantly became hooked. I saw instant changes in my physique, and alongside that came more confidence, discipline, hard work, and focus that carried into all other aspects of my life. After years of working out, I began competing in bodybuilding competitions. This took all of this hard work and discipline to a whole new level. I was amazed by the power we all possess to change not only our physiques but just about anything in our lives that we want to.While completing my Master’s Degree in Social Work, I was working part-time as a Certified Personal Trainer at Bally Total Fitness on Staten Island. I knew I wanted to be involved in health and fitness, but I didn’t know that I would enjoy my part-time job more than what I was going to school for. After Graduate School, I found myself not wanting to leave the field of Personal Training, and it became full-time and then some for me.I would never say my Bachelor’s Degree (Psychology) and my Master’s Degree (Social Work) were a waste of time because I believe I’m able to use them to relate to and motivate others with Personal Training and Group Exercise. After about a year of intense planning, with the support of my family, friends, and Clients, Stanlaw Fitness opened its doors on July 13, 2015. It was a dream come true surrounded by the people that meant the most to me. It was a day I’ll never forget. While Stanlaw Fitness started as a one-man show with 50 Members, it has evolved 5 years later into 17 Team Members and over 200 Members. Our Team and our Members have truly become the driving force behind this studio, as they are not only family here, but raving fans who “bleed Stanlaw blue” as we say. While our primary focus is strength training with 1:1 Personal Training and Group Exercise, we have expanded our services to cardio workouts, kettlebell training, kickboxing, boot camps, Zumba, and Senior Fitness.I am so proud of what we have accomplished, but of course, there is always more to do and I want our studio to continue to grow to help more people. Our mission is to help as many people as possible improve their physical and mental health by “getting their 30” every day!Keep training hard!MikeAbout Counterparts:Join us for conversations about film, music, health, and life. 1 hr - Counterparts - Kenny Aronoff - March 22nd 2022
Kenny Aronoff is one of the most influential and in-demand drummers and percussionists in the world. He has entertained millions of people with his drumming, has played on thousands of records, and has been the “go-to” drummer for the biggest stars in music while providing the beat of American culture over four decades! https://kennyaronoff.com/
Kenny grew up in a big country farmhouse in a small town of 3,000 people in the hills of western Massachusetts. He was a self-taught drummer who at the young age of 16 decided to learn how to play timpani, mallets, and legit snare drum. He studied and played with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, including world-renowned timpanist Vic Firth. He went on to study for one year at the university of Massachusetts and four years at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, where among other honors, he was awarded the school’s prestigious performer’s certificate. During summer breaks, when he wasn’t studying timpani with Vic Firth, he played in symphony orchestras at the Aspen Music Festival (run by the Juilliard School of Music) and the Tanglewood Music Festival (run by the Boston Symphony Orchestra). After graduating, Kenny was offered timpani positions in several symphony orchestras, but instead said “no” because he still wanted to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band and be part of a team of musicians that recorded music and toured the world, just like The Beatles did. Kenny spent one year studying drum set with Alan Dawson in Boston and Gary Chester in New York before moving back to Bloomington to start his own band, “Streamwinner“.
