  • 1.15 Getting your course online

    Show Notes:

Sometimes the “online” bit of creating an online course can feel the most overwhelming.  In this episode, I help you understand the choices available to you so that you can make an informed decision about which option best suits you and your course:

    • Self-Hosted
    • Course Platforms and Complete Course Platforms
    • Course Marketplaces

    Action Step:

Research and decide what option best suits you and your course – on your own website or a third-party platform?

  • 1.14 Help them implement what they learn

    Show Notes:

Does your outcome lead to implementation?  Is implementation something you need to track?  In this episode, we are talking about implementation, the importance of an outcome that is of immediate use to your audience, and the three implementation strategies:

    • Make each task and activity easy (or break it down into digestible chunks)
    • Offer support to help students achieve great results
    • Gameification – progress rewards

    Action Step:

Look at your implementation strategies.  Do you have a strategy?  How do you help your students implement what they have learned in your course?

  • 1.13 Nail your course welcome

    Show Notes:

Do you put much thought into the welcome section of your course platform?  Why is it so important?  In this episode, we look at the humble welcome screen, what it should include, and discuss why it’s actually a key marketing tool for your course.   Your welcome section should include:

    • Immediate automated response to a sale
    • Instructions on how to access the content
    • Preselling: a reward for taking action
    • Support details
    • A warm welcome video
    • Somewhere to connect (optional)
    • Offer “Accountability Buddies” (optional)

    Action Step:

Look at how you are currently welcoming your students.  When they click the buy button, what happens next?  Would you be happy receiving that welcome? Apply welcome section strategies.

  • 1.12 Make the shortest course possible

    Show Notes:

I want you to make your course as short as it can be.  In this episode, I’m going to convince you to do something that seems completely counter-intuitive.  This isn’t about making things teeny tiny or devoid of quality, but instead about finding the quickest way to reach a crystal clear outcome.

    Action Step:

Be content critical.  Analyse every tiny detail of your course and ask yourself, “Does that need to be there?”

  • 1.11 Using assessment in your course

    Show Notes:

Are your students understanding your course content?  Is the course content effective?  In this episode, we are talking about the necessity for assessments in an online course.

This is not about passes and fails and stress, but instead about ensuring the audience is getting the right outcome from your course and monitoring whether all of your content is truly working.

    Action Step:

Look for opportunities to build questions into your course material, such as at the end of each module.

  • 1.10 Are you tracking your students' progress?

    Show Notes:

So, your course is up and running, time to pat yourself on the back and put your feet up, right?  But wait … are you tracking your students’ progress?  In this episode, we talk about the upsides of being able to track your students’ progress:

    • What is working well and what is not?
    • Analysing patterns like sticking points
    • Student engagement
    • Business growth insights

    Action Step:

Have a look at the course platform you are using and assess whether it can track users, how it tracks users and the kinds of statistics that it gives you.  If you already have a course running, find those stats and really analyse them – what is really working and what is not?

  • 1.9 Do you need video in your course?

    Show Notes:

Does the thought of creating videos for your online course send shivers down your spine?  Is it really necessary for all online courses? In this episode, we talk about:

    • The pros and cons of using video in online courses
    • The ways you could incorporate but not dominate with video
    • Balance and necessity

    Action Step:

Analyse your videos.  Make sure they have captions or at least an overview or transcript.  Go back to your course plan and assess where it is a NEEDED – a genuinely useful learning tool.

  • 1.8 Why you should start small

    Show Notes:

You’ve heard it before – size isn’t everything!  But isn’t bigger better?  In this episode, we look into the benefits of creating a small course before jumping into the deep end by creating a big one:

    • The practicality of content size
    • Approachability and availability
    • Building up to something bigger
    • Using small to build your audience

    Action Step:

Look at your business strategy and see whether it allows for a micro-solution – starting with a small offering to test the market before attempting a big offering.

  • 1.7 Your course isn't about you

    Show Notes:

Your course idea has got you excited and that’s fantastic … but what about your audience?  It’s time to put egos aside.  In this episode, we look at why your course has NOTHING to do with you and EVERYTHING to do with your audience.

    Action Step:

Think about your welcome area and welcome process – who is the focus? How are you making the course all about them?

  • 1.6 Validate your course idea

    Show Notes:

Are you questioning whether there is a need for your course? What if you put in all that effort and then nobody signs up?  In this episode, we talk about how you can validate your course idea BEFORE you start building.  We cover:

    • Is pre-selling a good thing?
    • The use of waitlists and deposits
    • Building your audience

    Action Step:

Go away and validate your course idea. Create a waitlist, make a system to create a deposit, or work out how you’re going to pre-sell and start taking cash.
