Caught on the water during a storm the disciples, seasoned sailors, find themselves buffeted by the wind and waves, stuck in no-mans-land unable to get to the shore. Through this storm, Jesus walks out on the water to meet them, responding to their hopelessness with words of comfort. Our worst trials cannot separate us from Jesus. And Peter responds with great faith, "Tell me to come to you on the water. " He believes that if Jesus speaks it then it will be. As Jesus beckons him forward, Peter walks away from the boat keeping his eyes on Jesus. But when he has reached a distance from the boat he is distracted by his fear, by the sheer force of the winds and waves surrounding him. His hopelessness returns and he begins to sink. But Jesus reaches out for Peter and pulls him to safety. Once secured, Jesus invites him to persist and walks arm in arm with Peter back to the boat. Jesus walks with us as we face trial, doubt, and lose our faith. He reaches for us in our hopelessness and walks hand-in-hand with us as our faith is restored.
