In this inaugural episode of our new series focusing on the implications of the global pandemic, we check in with two monastics. First, Bhikkhu Subhuti, an American monk at Pa Auk Monastery, talks to us from his remote kuti in Pyin Oo Lwin. Next, we hear an excerpt from a talk that Thabarwa Sayadaw gave to an assembly of foreign meditators at his Than Lyin branch monastery. There is something special in starting this series off with the words of two committed bhikkhus: leaving behind the fetters of lay society in order to devote themselves to the contemplative life, monastics are sometimes able to present a novel or fresh perspective to the “daily grind” invisible to us lay folk, when we can’t see the forest through the trees.
