The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated already-stressful events for many. Additionally, the quarantine restrictions have created downstream consequences including social isolation and diminished support networks. The needs and challenges faced by families living in poverty are exacerbated by coronavirus. Deanna Pruitt with the Terrace Clay Family Support Center is working to address those concerns.

Each year, it’s estimated over 4.million youth and young adults experience homelessness. The inefficiencies of social services, safety nets, even state and federal regulations to protect the most vulnerable in our society are laid bare during Covid-19. Already over-stressed, under-funded, resource-strained; options-deprived Health and Human Service agencies are scrambling to meet the physical and emotional needs of these young people.

Each year, over 4 million youth and young adults experience homelessness. For many homeless kids school is a safe harbor. Schools provide shelter, food, healthcare, socialization, and are a respite from uncertainty. What practices exists to combat the myriad of issues homeless kids face getting a solid education within the restrictions of a pandemic? Imagine attempting to participate in online instruction through a cell phone – using public WIFI in a shelter or parking lot.

In this last episode on The Education Gap, we explore a personal point of view on inequality in public education. Lee Granados is a parent of two school-age children in Washington DC. For added education cred, Lee is also a former teacher. She has firsthand experience with the education gap between private and public, suburban and urban, and even with schools within the DC public education system. She is a fierce advocator for education equality – no matter your zip code.
