  • The Dark Side of Personality

On a typical, good day, people get to see our best side - our bright side.  Under times of stress, pressure, or even self-indulgence, however, people might get to see the more extremes of our personality.  Our derailers.  Our dark side.

In this podcast, Gillian Hyde, Chief Psychologist at PCL explains how the Hogan Development Survey can shed light on our extremes of personality and how they can adversely impact on our relationships, our reputations and our success.

  • Board Evaluation - Ali Gill

The boards of organisations are in place to provide a strategic focus and governance for the Executive.  Events such as the coronavirus crisis fundamentally challenge this decision-making process.  In the fallout of the last global crisis - the banking crisis -  just over a decade ago, Ali Gill set up an organisation the help evaluate the effectiveness of boards.  In this podcast Ali talks about some of the people dimensions of the board, and how even board members need feedback and development.

  • Surviving cancer twice - Sarah's story

"People say to you, 'stay positive, stay positive', but how do you stay positive? I would always think about the future. I would see myself with my grandchildren. I would see myself on a holiday. It's actually made me braver. I hate flying and I hadn't got on a plane for eighteen years. And last year when we went to Spain and all my favourite people were there, I thought, this isn't as bad as I remember it being. And now my husband is planning a long-haul trip, saying, 'now that you've done it once, we're going to travel the world'.

So it has changed me, but a lot of it for the positive."

  • Snakes Gangs and Brain Tumours - challenging the training playbook with Rich Egan

This fascinating interview was recorded with Rich Egan from Rich Learning Solutions.  Rich describes how he has used snakes in training and is currently developing a management programme that will work with ex-gang members to deliver an authentic and profound learning experience for managers.  At the heart of this approach is the use of emotional intelligence to fundamentally support others and affect change, and the comfort, stretch, panic model that gets to a deeper level of engagement.  Rich also shares his own personal journey that is partly behind his pushing of the boundaries.

Note that Rich drops a couple of f-bombs in this podcast.  As he says, the odd swear word may be the least of your challenges as a manager!  Absolutely loved doing this interview.  It was pre-CV and recorded in the Cafe Nero next to Birmingham New Street station - so a bit of background noise for those who are missing it!
