Today in episode 12 I’m joined by Megan McElfresh, she’s a third generation stained glass artist, and the wizard behind the curtain aka the executive director of the Stained Glass Association of America. Building a community and connecting people within this niche glass world is something I’m passionate about and a huge reason for starting this podcast. In Megan I found a kindred spirit in those efforts amongst others.
From her vantage point she sees us all, from the part time hobbyist to the major studios. BTW did you know that all those huge studios need the small makers to keep this industry alive? It’s true, and she’s going to explain to us why! The SGAA also has a very cool history of protecting the stained glass industry here in the states, and I think this falls into the category of things we should really know, so Megan is here to enlighten us on that too. 
She’s also an advocate for safety in the studio and I bet something she says today is something that you didn’t think of doing or you didn’t realize you needed and it could change your life! For real. It did mine. I thought I was being pretty careful and turns out there were some easy -  but major - improvements I needed to make in the studio to protect myself better. 

Besides being a walking Encyclopedia Britannica Megan is also funny, sweet, and someone I’m now proud to call a friend. Keep listening and you’ll see why…

Ep. 11 - Rarely do we get to witness an artist move through a craft with an eagerness to explore new possibilities with the curiosity we once were taught as children, but most have not carried into adulthood. When we do get to witness this special kind of artist, their work always leads to greatness. Everyone, I'd like you to meet Hannah Gregory. She's known for combining ancient techniques with newer, modern ones and adding her own twist (and yep, sometimes DNA too.) PINK GLASS:
"It's true there is gold in some pinks (usually the warmer ones), but most of the bluer cooler pinks have erbium. There are no dyes involved in glass colors, the glass is all melted from raw materials in weight proportions just like a recipe; this mix is called 'batch' and generally includes compounds + raw materials that add color (copper, tin, cobalt, gold, etc.)  So that's true for basically all the glass we use for stained glass, and the toxicity isn't really different between the colors - the most toxic part of the process is when the materials are being mixed and the furnaces are being charged as it's a lot of toxic airborne particles floating around. There are issues with emissions from the melting of the materials, but that's typically stuff that can be solved with how the factory is built - although this problem has greatly changed our industry in the US because some of our factories were in the middle of now-thriving cities.  What makes pinks so expensive though is that they burn out way faster than blues & greens - meaning if you melt an entire furnace of a gold-pink glass, you can only use some portion of it before the color burns out, pinks being the shortest of all the colors. Since these colors are meant to be replicable, when the color starts to burn out and doesn't match the color standard, the glass has to be used for something else, or this is what sometimes becomes limited runs."
