After a five-year hiatus, the Crawl or Die sequel begins filming in the American southwest.

And Nicole Alonso will reprise her role as Tank, the woman who stood tall in the face of terror and won.

In addition, writer, director, and editor, Oklahoma Ward will once again helm the project. After all, it’s his creepy alien offspring.

The Shining: Shines on After 40 Years 

In 1980, Stanley Kubrick brought Stephen King’s best selling novel, The Shining to life.

Regardless of the original source material, Kubrick created a frenetic and most unsettling horror. The story is centered on a maze of emotions and craziness exuded by the Torrance family, which opens the hotel to their bizarre and negative energy.

This leads to a film of dark atmosphere, engaging music thanks to the brilliance of Wendy Carlos and Rachel Kind, and from deep-felt performances by Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duval.

The “mad scientist” from Dr. Frankenstein to Dr. Heiter, all have this “holier than thou” attitude, which feeds into the average “Playing God” dynamic. Mediocre Horror 2019: Unfortunately the Norm 

Yes, mediocre horror 2019 is that purgatory of movies somewhere between good and bad.

And in this very gray nether region, storytelling is usually at the heart of the matter.

Unfortunately, especially with the genre, mediocre horror is usually the norm. A half-baked idea that fails to carry through till the end. Or maybe the story is dis-jointed and fails to work. Regardless, this leaves the horror fan imagining what could have been… 

Too Many Entries to Discuss

Since mediocre horror is the norm, there are certainly too many entries to talk about.

The Last Knock focuses on those films that may have received accolades but should not have. These run the gamut from commercial cinema to bare bones independent features.

This episode centers on such samplings of Anna and the Apocalypse, The Dead Don’t Die, Us, 3 From Hell, Crawl, and the incredibly over-loved Midsommar, among others.

Playing God: The Horror Movie 

Ahh, playing God in horror cinema… A good time for the audience, a bad time for the characters. 

Usually some self-indulgent male scientist or doctor, better yet, a pseudo-scientist or pseudo-doctor, has some bright medical idea. And that crazy notion must be explored for it will bring glory and accolades to the “creator.” But something always goes wrong, and that usually means bodies, mayhem, and death.

When it comes to playing God, we can chalk it up to ego-mania and hubris, but is there something else to consider?

Barnyard Horror: On the Farm 

There’s more horror films that take place on the farm, leaving “barnyard horror” as a sub-genre some might fight for.

The Last Knock plows through its share of barnyard horror to discover which ones wield a good crop of entertainment.

Crop Rotation

We explore the overly cultivated, such as the Children of the Corn franchise, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jeepers Creepers, among others.

But we’ll also sow the seeds for barnyard horror you may have missed: Isolation, Black Sheep, No Telling, and Scarecrows.

One thing we will focus on is how the farm is used as a thematic device to denote isolation and distance. And we’ll see how the genre holds up as compared to how farms and families are portrayed in dramatic ventures.

For instance, is every farmer in barnyard horror an uneducated bucolic worker, or are they portrayed as well-rounded people?

We’ll take a gander at that and so much more on this latest episode.

Best and Worst Horror 2019: A Tough Year 

When it comes to best and worst horror 2019, there was an array of movies to choose from. Your The Last Knock team covered a wide range of independent commercial films. And some of them may have not appeared on your horror radar.

Even so, narrowing the list down was no easy task.

Culling the Herd

Crash and Jonny had a tough time pulling together the best and worst horror 2019, but there’s more… In the end both were left with a large amount of leftovers movies.

To give these movies their due, wherever they fall, the next podcast episode will feature these “movies in the middle.”

So consider best and worst horror 2019 a sort of part one of a part two.

And that “part two” may be even more compelling for some and more disturbing to others. This means, if you didn’t hear one of your favorite or most despised films from the year in this show, you’re likely to hear about it in the next installment.

In another of our special on-going “Behind the Horror” series, The Last Knock evaluates the use (or misuse?) of blind characters.

From Peeping Tom to The Hills Have Eyes 2, and from The Sentinel to the most recent addition, Don’t Breathe, blindness has been an oft-used theme in horror.

Exploitation or Exaltation?

We take a look at many of the films in the unexpected blind sub-genre. The goal: To discover what works, what doesn’t, and how trope-filled stories with blind characters become.

Most important, does using a blind character result in exploitation?

As horror cinema does regularly, what may appear to be something damaging and inappropriate usually becomes the opposite.

Even so, we set out to find what horror films build the best stories around blind character. Because, quite often, being blind is never really treated as a detriment. Instead, blindness may be what saves a character, or gives a person that extra special something to rise above.  

Plus, we hope to present horror films with blind-centric characters you may have missed.

Take it to the Climax? 

Billy Crash didn’t know Gaspar Noe’s film Climax was a horror until Jonny Numb told him so.

Hailed by many as an extended dance video, The Last Knock takes a closer look into the latest from the French director. The man behind the intense Irreversible and the journeyman Enter the Void‘s latest venture may – or may not – have more merit than meets the filmgoer’s eye.

Dance the Night Away

Climax stars the enchanting Sofia Butella, a dancer at a party where things ultimately go awry. But is that enough to create an engaging and vibrant tale beyond dancing, dancing, accusations, and more dancing?

Well, Billy and Jonny differ on the merit of the film. So, if you’re torn between love and hate regarding Noe’s latest foray into film, you might find some answers if you listen in.

Regardless of whether Climax works or not, Benoît Debie’s cinematography is masterful, as well as Ernesto Giolitti’s lighting.
