  • 24: Process, Retreats and Dark Nights of the Soul
So, the question is: what’s your process? What rhythm is best for you? Night? Daytime? One hour? Two hours? 12 hours like Flaubert? When is your most productive time? When do you come up with new ideas? Knowing “your time” makes you consistent. It allows you, helps you to show up on time to work, every day. You have to ask yourself the question: how do I process ideas, words, images, reality best? When is my best time, to process? Words in the evening, or words in the morning? Ideas in the morning and evening? Well, then that’s your process. For me deep creation, inspiration, happens in the mornings. The afternoons are good for communal creation, left brain creation.

  • 23: Balance, Health and Notebooks
Daydream It's important. It’s another ingredient to balance and health. Because daydreaming is to your brain what sleep is to your body. Daydreaming allows you to synthesize what you’ve already created, allows it to cook. Also, it allows you to start the process all over again, creating the space to get inspired again. So at the end of the day, relax. Pause. You worked. Enjoy a hike, a glass of wine. Play the violin like Einstein. He actually said some of his greatest physics breakthroughs occurred when he took a break. He saw it as connecting different parts of his brain in novel ways. Walk like an Auden, or fish like a Hemingway but stare at the stars like Wilde said in his oft used quote: “We’re all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

  • 22: Limits, Genre and Numbers
Have patience. “Instant gratification” does not exist, only moment to moment “joy” in creating. Plan long term, and work short term on understanding the limits of what you create to understand the basics so you can add and enhance the genre, the field that inspires you.

  • 21: Focus and Creativity
Keep the non-essential behind the damn bushes, and remember, focus is not an eight hour work day. It can be as little as fifteen minutes a day. As long as they are fifteen focused minutes, every day.

  • 20: Work and Creativity
Doing the same thing every day, over time, can be very productive. So, work every day. Be focused, something I’ll talk about in the next episode. If you’re focused on the work, and work consistently, then the book appears, the project gets done, the Imagination mysteriously steps into reality in front of you as a creation.

  • 19: Mentors and Talent Borrows, Genius Steals
You always have to be challenging your skill-set. If you don’t know how to do something, learn. How do you learn? Copy, read, steal from the masters. Get their skills, to the best of your ability.

Talent is nothing if you don’t put in the time, 10,000 hours as Gladwell would put it, or 7 or 8 years like an apprentice. But even after we’ve put in the time of the apprenticeship we have to become the journeyman. We have to find masters to work for, day to day, so we can master our art, all the time learning our craft from the dead masters, who’s work, creations are on the walls of churchs and buildings wherever we go, if we look.

  • 18: Enthusiasm, Passion and Madness
Technique and talent are important, but passion, madness and enthusiasm are fundamental.

Look for mentors, peers who use enthusiastic, inspired, passionate, mad! They’re probably black sheep like you. They don’t allow lexical prisons to be another Wall against creation. They dissolve the Walls of lexical prisons by being enthusiastic, passionate, mad, by embracing the Imagination, moving towards it, not away from it. You may not find too many of them, but when you find one they inspire you, enthuse you with passion and positive madness, because in the end mentors are like friends, like books, I’d rather have one great one than a library of bad ones.

  • 17: The Dancer and the Dance
Doing what you love is how we find out how to dance, to create, to become the dance, because then the dancer disappears and flow appears, which is joyful and rewarding.

You don’t have to be a dancer to dance. Just like you don’t have to be a golf pro to love playing golf. Why? Because it’s an act. You golf. You dance. In that moment you’re the golfer, the dancer. You become the creation when you’re creating, when you dance, when you hit the ball down the fairway, when you’re “in it” you become part of that action.

  • 16: Rejection and Failure
The walls of rejection and failure can be transformed into opportunities, into doors towards the imagination and creativity.

No work is ever going to be perfect, but no work will be created if you create a wall of perfection, rejection, procrastination. By starting again, creating again, you will get inspired again. So embrace failure. Don’t be afraid of it. Failure’s how we learn. See it as a Door toward imagining new creations. Every creator fails. Critics criticize, and yes creators fail, but creators also create something new. Be a critic, after the creative process. It’s called the editing stage. Authenticity lies there. You create an authentic work out of failure by conquering failure, by conquering the fear of failure, by simply accepting it is something that is part of the creative process. Create. Don’t compare yourself to others when you’re in it, creating. Comparison destroys the imagination, destroys creativity. So have heart. Be fearless. Risk. Invite failure, because failure is absolutely essential. Don’t let gatekeepers and your inner critic think you are a failure. If you’re not failing, well then you’re not getting better. And some day, when you least expect it, something you create will be beautiful to others, even if you think it fails in so many way.

  • 15: Doors and the Cave
Doors are a beautiful metaphor and guide towards the imagination out of the Cave and into the light of creativity.

In this introduction to Doors John sees imagination as a potential we all possess. It can be opened in a vast array of human activities – anything from traditional art and craft work (writing, painting, composing and so on) to sports and leisure activities (baseball or establishing a garden) or in other less obvious cultural forms (flower arrangement, say, or tea ceremonies). At best, this is what a Door symbolizes, an opening to positive creation and imagination, an opening through every Wall, away from the illusionary security of fear, into aesthetic, ritualistic and symbolic creation. The key to the door is the Imagination, not the creativity of greed on Wall Street. Yes, Wall Street. A street of Walls. You become a creative insider on that street. You become a creative outsider when you walk through the door of the Imagination with its many paths and streets.
