  • Optimizing focus when your project brings up difficult emotions
Sometimes your writing project brings up difficult emotions that then get in the way of writing. In this track I talk about strategies for doing the work while being compassionate with yourself. This post is based on a conversation that happened during A Meeting With Your Writing, our live co-writing sessions and part of the Academic Writing Studio. It has been shared with the permission of the Studio member involved.Other posts about Optimizing Focus can be found in the Spotlight on Optimizing Focus. https://soundcloud.com/jovanevery/sets/spotlight-on-optimizing-focusI refer to strategies for finding time to do this work. I've written more about that in Finding TIme for your Scholarly Writing (A Short Guide) available as an eBook or paperback.Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/optimizing-focus-difficult-emotions/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: https://jovanevery.co.uk/newsletter Take the FREE 15 Minute Writing Challenge: https://jovanevery.co.uk/15-min-writing-challenge/ Or join the Academic Writing Studio: https://academicwritingstudio.co.uk Support me on KoFi here: https://ko-fi.com/jovanevery I'm no longer on Twitter but I'm on Bluesky here: https://bsky.app/profile/jovanevery.bsky.social Find me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jovanevery/ Or follow along on Facebook here: https://facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoach

  • This is not *your* new year, new start
There is a lot of new year energy in January but if you work in higher education and live in Europe or North America it's more like the middle of the year. I reassure you that you can do all the annual planning and reflection later in the year, and propose some ideas for what might be useful right now.Read the post here: (coming soon)For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: jovanevery.co.uk/newsletterFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • The frustrations of being a dedicated teacher
Grading can be frustrating because it makes you wonder whether you have done a good job as a teacher. In this post I address your ethical responsibilities as a teacher in relation to students' autonomy to decide how much work they want to put in to any particular course. My hope is that this framing will help you see the positive learning that has happened for most of your students, even if they are not as committed to this topic (or to getting A grades) as you were as a student. This track was first published as a blog post on my website in March 2016. The audio version was recorded in November 2021.Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/frustrations-dedicated-teacher/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: jovanevery.co.uk/newsletterFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • The emotional toll of grading
Do you find grading emotionally difficult? Do you procrastinate about getting started? Does it occupy your thoughts and make it difficult to do other work? You are not alone. In this track I take a blog post I read about this kind of emotional toll and suggest ways you might approach the work to minimize anxiety. This is where I explain more about what I mean by grading out from average (which I've mentioned in other posts). This track was first published as a blog post on my website in April 2015. It has been edited since then. The audio version was recorded in November 2021.Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/emotional-toll-grading/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: jovanevery.co.uk/newsletterFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • When priorities and boundaries feel like cutting corners
Prompted by a client who had hard deadlines for writing and a personal thing around the same time her grades needed to be submitted, I talk about how to get your grading done well without making it your sole activity for this period. • Writing is not a reward for getting your grading done
Because your grading is time sensitive, it is tempting to set everything else aside to do it. You may be eager to get to your writing at the end of semester but feel like you have to do the grading first. In this track I talk about why that might be counterproductive and suggest ways you can combine writing and grading. This track was first published as a blog post on my website in April 2016. • You can ignore the grading
While your grading may be time sensitive, it isn't necessarily urgent. Prompted by a Twitter conversation, I talk about why it might be nice to ignore the grading to focus on some research. I go on to discuss how you could experiment with doing both. This track was originally published as a blog post on my website in December 2009. It has been revised several times since. • You can ignore the grading, reprise
That pile of grading is time sensitive but it may not be urgent. It's okay to ignore the grading to actually get some rest. • Do you have to finish the grading before you can write?
A comment from a client alerted me to the ways in which writing and grading may not be competing for your time in grading season. There is an optimal amount of grading you can do in a day. And with teaching finished, that might mean you *do* have time to write.A much shorter version of this post was originally published in March 2015.
