  • Getting out of grading jail
Although it is understandable why #GradingJail might be a popular Twitter hashtag, grading season doesn't have to feel like that. I talk about how forcing yourself to grade and only grade might be counterproductive and how giving yourself boundaries and making sure you also do more interesting and nourishing activities might feel less jail-like and also be more productive.Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/getting-out-of-grading-jail/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: jovanevery.co.uk/newsletterFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.ukThis track was first posted as a blog post on my website in December 2012. I has been edited a few times since then. The audio version was recorded in November 2021.

  • Introduction to Spotlight On: Grading Season
"Grading season" is the period between the last teaching session and the deadline for submitting grades. Over the years, I've written several posts about grading as one among many responsibilities, and about the emotional and identity issues associated with the work of grading. This track provides an introduction to this collection of recordings of posts about grading that I've written over the past several years. The tracks referred to in this introduction can be found in the playlist, here: https://soundcloud.com/jovanevery/sets/spotlight-on-grading-season/All tracks were originally published as blog posts in the library on JoVanEvery.co.ukFor more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: JoVanEvery.co.uk/NewsletterFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • What if *you* need an extension?
I wade into the discussion about granting extensions, situating it in the broader discussion about academic workloads and mental health. I discuss what might be kind to the students, what might be kind to yourself, and propose a process for requesting extensions you could use or adapt. I also talk about the limits of granting extensions to address the things you and your students might be facing. At the end I recommend two episodes of All The Things ADHD podcast, both available via: AllTheThingsADHD.com/uncategorized/s4-e4-two-educators-walked-into-a-productive-discussion/Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/what-if-you-need-an-extension/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: jovanevery.co.uk/newsletterFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • Do you have too many writing projects?
While working on one thing at a time may not work for you, having too many active writing projects isn't very effective either. In this track I talk about how the extra cognitive work of managing too many tasks affects you focus. I also suggest ways of limiting yourself to about 3 projects at a time. It's not easy. • Meditation as practice and metaphor
There is evidence that having a meditation practice can improve your ability to focus. I talk a bit about how that works and then go on to talk about how meditation is also a good metaphor for understanding the relationship between focus and distraction. Distraction is normal. The important thing is how you get back to focusing on the thing you want to focus on.Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/meditation-practice-metaphor-focus/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: https://jovanevery.co.uk/newsletter Take the FREE 15 Minute Writing Challenge: https://jovanevery.co.uk/15-min-writing-challenge/ Or join the Academic Writing Studio: https://academicwritingstudio.co.uk Support me on KoFi here: https://ko-fi.com/jovanevery I'm no longer on Twitter but I'm on Bluesky here: https://bsky.app/profile/jovanevery.bsky.social Find me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jovanevery/ Or follow along on Facebook here: https://facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoach
