  • You are not lazy
First published on my website in April 2015, this track argues that not only are you not lazy but neither is anyone else. Lazy, and her evil twin Busy, are moral judgements that keep you from getting the rest, food, and exercise you need to do your best work. Recommended in this track:• An interview with Devon Price, author of Laziness Does Not Exist (smartbitchestrashybooks.com/podcast/440-laziness-does-not-exist-with-dr-devon-price)To read the text version of this post: jovanevery.co.uk/you-are-not-lazyFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • Is dystopia the new normal?
Just when you were getting your head around working in a pandemic, the dystopia dial got turned up. You might be wondering whether you should even keep working in this situation. I point to some things I've said about this earlier. I also talk about importance of self care (rest, nourishing food, movement) and give you some ideas about managing your energy over the next few months. • Prioritizing rest over the winter break

It's difficult to get enough rest between Semester 1 and Semester 2. It's made harder by the cultural expectation of productivity. In this track I ponder the fear of squandering your break. Rest first. Allow yourself to enjoy any festivities and the preparation.

    • "What is your plan to rest?" addresses the problem of how difficult it is to rest. Related posts on my website:

  • Valuing Intellectual Engagement
Are you treating intellectual engagement as guiding star? What might that mean? After all, you are still going to be doing many of the same things. What difference does it make to how you do them? What criteria does this suggest for making decisions about administrative or service tasks? What criteria does this suggest for seminar invitations, reviews, conferences, and collaborative research opportunities? What difference does this make to how you approach your research and writing? What difference does this make to how you approach your teaching?Tracks referred to in this track:• From October: Priorities and Boundaries in the Face of Job Insecurity• From September: Juggling, Jigsaws, and Navigating by the Stars• For more about ungrading, see Jesse Stommel "How to ungrade" (www.jessestommel.com/how-to-ungrade)Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • Email Overwhelm as a Collective Problem.
Following up a Twitter conversation, I outline why I recommend the policy of not sending email outside of normal office hours. The primary purpose of this policy is to contribute to a culture in which you have the flexibility to do your work when it suits you best, without that becoming pressure to work all the time. I held a class in the Academic Writing Studio to address the larger issue of email overwhelm with due attention to the emotional aspects, and have since expanded this to a series of Library posts. • Priorities & boundaries in the face of job insecurity
The fear of job losses in higher education is very real. In the face of that fear you may be finding it even harder to manage your workload. In this track I face some hard truths about the context and suggest principles and questions to guide your decision making. As the popular meme says, you are not required to set yourself on fire to keep other people worm. • Lies you've been told about loving your work.
Your employer will try to use the fact that you love your work to get you to do more work, with less support, and for less money. This may lead you to think that loving your work is to be avoided. This is not true. The problem isn't with loving your work. The problem is with the exploitation. In this track I talk about all the ways that loving your work makes it more valuable, and encourage you to value the work you love and to respect it's worth.Read the post here: jovanevery.co.uk/lies-about-loving-your-workFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • Where does confidence come from?

External validation is not a reliable antidote to self-doubt. In this track I talk about 3 elements that contribute to confidence: meaningfulness, security, and support. I also suggest some ways to look for and amplify those elements, even if they are not available in the way that you would like.First published in 2018 as a series of 3 blog posts.Read the posts here: • Meaningfulness (jovanevery.co.uk/where-does-confidence-come-from-part-1-meaningfulness)• Security (jovanevery.co.uk/where-does-confidence-come-from-part-2-security)• Support (jovanevery.co.uk/where-does-confidence-come-from-part-3-support)Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.ukImage by Artem Maltsev via Unsplash

  • Confidence Tricks.
Everyone struggles with confidence at least some of the time. While confidence can’t be overly reliant on external validation, negative feedback is always difficult, and it’s tough to maintain your confidence when external validation is slow in coming. Confidence also depends on things you don’t have complete control over. In this track, I want to share a few strategies to help boost your confidence when you are struggling.First published on my blog in April 2019.Read the post here: jovanevery.co.uk/confidence-tricksFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk
