  • Time perception and how long things actually take
Another issue that came up in Office Hours in the Academic Writing Studio: feeling like things take a long time or that you haven't accomplished anything in a day. Memory affects how we perceive time. In this track I talk about how you can ensure that you store more accurate memories of how you are spending your days. The text version was first posted on 1 April 2020 here: jovanevery.co.uk/time-perception-and-how-long-things-actually-take/Referred to in this track: • You are not lazy: https://jovanevery.co.uk/you-are-not-lazy/• Off the Clock by Laura VanderkamFollow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • Autonomy in pandemic conditions
When faced with confusing and contradictory directions from management, you need to use the autonomy your academic career affords you to manage your workload and stress. Your level of autonomy will depend on job security and institutional culture. This track outlines processes for making and documenting decisions to manage risk and boost your confidence. This post grew out of a conversation during Office Hours in the Academic Writing Studio and was originally published 31/04/20. • Transitioning to Summer
You probably think of the academic year as having 2 seasons: term-time and not-term-time. There is also a weird in between time where you no longer have scheduled teaching but it isn't really not-term-time. That's what I talk about in this track. I wrote and recorded this just before the major pandemic related changes happened in universities in the UK, US, and Canada. I fear it feels a bit dated already. Treat it as a reminder of the fact that things would have been in transition anyway even if you are now coping with much bigger rapid changes to your work and working conditions. I will be writing and recording more specific material over the next few weeks. You might also check out some other things I've written that might help you figure out how to make good use of this in-between time. • Thoughts on academic freedom, scholarly publishing, and mundane practices
I value freedom and autonomy. I know freedom and autonomy are important factors for many people who choose an academic career. I also value community and collective action, which makes me uncomfortable with some of the highly individualistic ways that freedom and autonomy get discussed.A blog post I came across recently provides an entry into this intersection between academic freedom and collective work. It illustrates the ways in which grand values like academic freedom are constituted through mundane processes and practices. It also points to the ways in which struggles over workload and recognition may be the surface manifestation of struggles over deeper values.Read the post here: jovanevery.co.uk/academic-freedom-publishing-mundane-practices/Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com/JoVanEveryFind my Facebook Page here: facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoachImage by Wesley Tingey via UnsplashJoin the Academic Writing Studio: academicwritingstudio.co.uk

  • Hiking as a metaphor for (summer) writing
Most academics recognise that summer offers an opportunity to write in ways that are not possible during term time. In this track I talk about how your term time writing relates to that summer writing.
