  • It *is* possible to write in term time

There is no way you can do all the writing you want and need to do if you only write during the summer and your sabbaticals. It’s hard to write during term time. But it is possible. The trick is to figure out a way to do that that works for you.Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/possible-write-term-time/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: https://jovanevery.co.uk/newsletter Take the FREE 15 Minute Writing Challenge: https://jovanevery.co.uk/15-min-writing-challenge/ Or join the Academic Writing Studio: https://academicwritingstudio.co.uk Support me on KoFi here: https://ko-fi.com/jovanevery I'm no longer on Twitter but I'm on Bluesky here: https://bsky.app/profile/jovanevery.bsky.social Find me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jovanevery/ Or follow along on Facebook here: https://facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoach

  • 15 minutes a day

One of the earliest things I wrote about writing for 15-minutes a day drew on Robert Boice’s work and suggests experimenting with 15-minute sessions. • The value of experiments

The only way you can figure out if writing for very short periods of time will work for you, is to try it. In this track, I talk about designing experiments. • Spotlight On: The Power of 15 Minutes (Intro)
This Spotlight focuses on what very short periods of time can contribute to your writing practice. I do not think you can have a satisfying writing practice by *only* cobbling together these 15 minute sessions. However, I do think that making good use of very short chunks of time will make a significant difference to your writing practice. Posts linked in this track have also been recorded and can be found in the accompanying playlist.Read the post here: https://jovanevery.co.uk/spotlight-on-the-power-of-15-minutes/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: https://jovanevery.co.uk/newsletter Or join the Academic Writing Studio: https://academicwritingstudio.co.uk Support me on KoFi here: https://ko-fi.com/jovanevery I'm no longer on Twitter but I'm on Bluesky here: https://bsky.app/profile/jovanevery.bsky.social Find me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jovanevery/ Or follow along on Facebook here: https://facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoach

  • Burnout - A personal experience

I invited Studio member and client: Myriam Houssay-Holzschuch to share something about her experience of burnout. She preferred an interview to a guest blog post.

I learned a lot from this conversation and I think you will too. Fixing this requires systemic changes that are out of our control. That is frustrating, or even enraging.

As Emily and Amelia Nagoski point out in their excellent book on the topic, you can't fight for those systemic changes when you are suffering from burnout. If listening/reading is distressing, take a break. Look after yourself. Acknowledging the problem is the first step to fixing it, even if it's not obvious how, or if, it can be fixed. Making things 5% better is worth it.

  • Reflections on 20 years of self-employment
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of my own self-employment I reflect on the journey. Although the context in which you might be considering career options is very different from mine in 2005, I try to indicate broader issues to consider and give a sense of what my choices meant for me. • Is it perfectionism? Or is it impatience
Do you struggle to get the first draft on the page? In this track I consider something a client said about assuming perfectionism was the root of this problem but realizing it might be impatient. I clarify what a first draft needs to do, and propose that trusting you have a process to get from "shitty first draft" to publishable work, helps you get it on the page so you can begin the process of revision. In the post there's another craft metaphor. Woodworking helps us think about stages and the kinds of tools we might need at different stages of the process. The text version of this track also includes a list of book and workshop recommendations (with links). And a photo of the American woodcock carving I mention.Read the full post here (with links): https://jovanevery.co.uk/perfectionism-vs-impatience/For more content like this, sign up to the monthly newsletter: https://jovanevery.co.uk/newsletter Or join the Academic Writing Studio: https://academicwritingstudio.co.uk Support me on KoFi here: https://ko-fi.com/jovanevery I'm no longer on Twitter but I'm on Bluesky here: https://bsky.app/profile/jovanevery.bsky.social Find me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jovanevery/ Or follow along on Facebook here: https://facebook.com/JoVEAcademicCareerCoach
