Today’s episode with Bobby Carpenter.

Bobby is formerly a linebacker at The Ohio State University, where he was drafted in the first round in 2006. He spent 6 years in the NFL on a multitude of teams. I had the privilege of meeting Bobby this past year, where he taught a private equity course at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State. Not only is he a professor today, but he also runs his own business ventures and is an active contributor on ESPN programming.

As he highlights in this episode, his most important roles he values are his role as a husband and a father. Bobby drops some great insights in this episode on work ethic, surrounding yourself with others who push you and support your dreams, and structuring an intentional life.

Alexander is the founder and executive director of Trans4m, which is a new type of educational entity that is an integral response to our current “world on fire” that faces massive socio-ecological-economic-and spiritual imbalances that altogether threaten the existence of humanity and the planet.

In this episode we discuss Alexander’s journey to starting this organization, his love for poetry, the ingenious I went through that he led, his PhD thesis, where he made breakthrough discoveries on the leadership capacity of some of the top CEOs in the world. And I think one of the most important things I took away from this experience is Alexander’s inspiration to draw insights from his experiences, failures, and connections to find ways to create a fuller society that helps uncover who we are as a humanity or person and how we can become fully human.

Today’s podcast is with Andrew Chiou. While I do enjoy podcasting older folks like Mark Sullivan, Johnny Sirpilla, or Linda Haley who have manifested wonderful businesses or life experiences over time, some of my favorite episodes are with people who are my age. Young people who are embracing the process of self-mastery. Andrew is one of those individuals in my life. I see this man at the gym at 5:30am each morning and have found that he is both incredible dependable and honest with himself. In this episode we talk about a mental transformation he recently underwent during a solo travel experience across the country. I find this episode valuable for many young adults who maybe just graduated and are traveling abroad for a couple months, maybe someone moving to a new city for an internship, or maybe just going through a new stage of life. I think one of the major lessons I learned through our conversation, was the importance of creating space and solitude in our lives and slowing down to the speed where truth and wisdom pierce our consciousness, where we can gain the perspective necessary to find meaning and purpose when our speedy lives return back to normal. I think many people aspire to taste the uncertainty of traveling to unknown places or planning a random travel experience, but Andrew made it happen and we talk about some of his major takeaways in this episode. Dr. Mark Sullivan is an organizational psychologist, an Ohio State Fisher College of Business faculty member, a coach to executives and government leaders, and a motivational speaker on personal leadership in high demand environments.

I had the privilege to assist Mark in his most recent project, which was a book Titled “THRIVE! When Trouble Visits, being your best in tough times.” Mark spent hundreds of hours interviewing CEOs, military generals, healthcare executives, elite professional athletes, Hollywood celebrities and many other individuals who have found the capacity to thrive in high pressure, and sometimes very traumatic, environments because of their commitment to Presence, Passion, and Purpose. This book is now available at Barnes and Nobles Bookstore.

What I love most about Mark is that he is not only a respected academic, but he is truly a student in the game of life who has overcome many challenges - some of which he shares in this podcast. I am lucky to sit across the table from Mark in this interview and learned so much from an awesome human being.
