Our primary driver for this episode revolves around following your curiosity. From continuing the conversation had with Simon Baxter about maintaining a deeper awareness and connection with nature, to discussing the detrimental side effects of so many people venturing into nature, Ben and I ponder our ultimate impact as photographers. Especially for those who run workshops in the popular national parks, and for those who showcase their photographic adventures on YouTube, what sort of impact are we truly having on the natural world, that we may not immediately realize? How do you think of productivity? Do you determine it based on what you accomplish throughout the day, or throughout the year? The other night, I found myself thinking about what I have all done throughout the past year, from graduating with my bachelors, starting this podcast, working with NPN, and graduating recently with my masters. There grew within me a sense of pride that I had never felt before - and that, I believe, many people miss out on. We focus so heavily on our daily accomplishments and overnight success stories, that we often miss the simple fact that success takes decades, not days. Simon has been a major influence on my own photography, constantly influencing me to learn more about the natural world around me as well as learning to embrace the local landscape. We discuss gardening and how not to lose your passion with photography, as well as why it is more beneficial to prioritize nature over any photograph you take. Student teaching is officially over and with that comes the reality that I have more time on my hands than I have had in the past six years. Though this sounds great on paper, the mentality that Ben and I share of always having to do something can quickly make this a living nightmare. One way to cope is through health and fitness, something which I plan to take more seriously given the additional time. Still, one can only run for so long before the body begs you to stop. And when you have plenty of time but little to do, and are sat at home, unwarranted feelings of isolation tend to creep in.

When starting a new leg of your journey, there are two overarching concepts about how to proceed: you may either keep your plans to yourself out of fear they won’t formulate, or you may push those plans out into the universe with hopes that good things will come your way. Now that student teaching has come to a close, I wonder which of these options is best for me. Do I commit to the habits I need to build, in order to best walk down this new path, or do I keep my plans to myself, fearing that by saying them aloud, I will no longer have the motivation to pursue them? Ben and I walk through these questions and more as we discuss virtue signaling, the concept behind Ben’s seasonal trips, building habits, and perfectionism.

Finding the time to head out into nature, especially for extended periods of time, can be a daunting task as you find your life becoming more complicated. While neither Ben nor I share in the exactly difficulty that a listener is facing, we do our best to discuss how to find the time for photography in a busy life. We talk about how important it is to alter your mindset away from the idea of constantly being in nature - like what is so often shown on social media - and toward a mindset that prioritizes photographing locally or, perhaps, changing what you photograph altogether. And while visiting the same locations time and again can seem like it would lead to creative stagnation, we discuss how it can, instead, lead to more intimate photographs that hold deeper meaning.

Based on comments received from better podcasters than myself, I have been making some alterations to not only the software and editing used but also the location in which I record. It is hoped that these changes are for the better and will improve the quality of Creative Banter. Ben and I start off this week by discussing some of these changes, before tackling a number of questions sent in on the Discord. Mostly, our conversation flows around the concept of quiet photography, a term that wonderfully describes both Ben’s and my work. We talk about our photographic intent, especially when it comes to print sizes, along with photography books - what we like and dislike about them. This episode, I’m joined by photographer Murray Livingston as we discuss a variety of topics surrounding the idea of poetic photography. We discuss the intersection of language and art - an idea which Murray is creating an eBook about - and whether it is important to think about such an idea while out in the field. We speak on photography as a meditative act, something which calms both body and soul, and, briefly, how this concept relates to the flow state. Toward the end of the episode, we talk about finding an audience and the importance of building a platform around education.

Since we have found ourselves with a bit of a backlog worth of questions and topic suggestions over on the Discord, it felt like a good time to work through some of them. But first, I have a few questions for Ben about his photographic approach, after having watched his recent Death Valley videos. We speak about how our decisive moment has changed over the years, as well as whether we bother to take a “safety shot” prior to waiting for that decisive moment to formulate.
