Walking my guest, Zacha Belok, through this Encouragement Session, I felt a wave of hope wash over me. I found myself at a retreat in Devon, in the UK seated at a long table next to a wonderful singer songwriter William Jaquet, I knew I should invite him to be on this program right away. William is a very warm and friendly presence and on this rainy storm night we found a relatively quiet space to capture this conversation. I had heard William play in the evening the night before without knowing until later that he’s been a part of the band Luvcat on tour, and that he’s been writing and recording with his own band Big Society. Just hearing William’s beautiful voice with an acoustic guitar was quite a rich experience, I knew there must be a wonderful story lurking in there somewhere. I always end my interviews with words of encouragement from my guests and thankfully William allowed me to tease him a bit, because as you will hear I needed to hold his feet to the fire to get him to look beyond the grind of getting to a really well written song and to think of the miracles and benefits of investing in creativity. To me this speaks to his devotion to holding himself accountable and wanting to keep the bar as high as possible.

My guest Gavin Goska is a wonderful explorer of genres and his interview is a bookend interview with Ed Douglas as they together make up Midnight Syndicate. I’m really captivated by the kindness and thoughtfulness of Gavin Goska. It is so fascinating to hear how Gavin approaches creating mysterious and frightening scores for imagined movies! As you might guess, Gavin’s talents extend beyond composing and playing multiple instruments. He’s also explored restoring Victorian homes and creating early classical compositions. It’s wonderful to have conversations like this with Gavin, learning how he approaches each project, what’s known, and what’s unknown. I have a feeling that whatever Gavin focuses on, it will be delightful, and we can all learn from his approach and his willingness to tackle each project. Gavin is another example of finding his own unique work-life balance through imagining possibilities and bringing them to life through his artistic expression.

I have known my guest Ruven Hannah for many years through the Billys organization in Northern California. I have seen Ruven’s performance art and recently witnessed Ruven focusing on pure storytelling. I did not know what  international experiences had played a part in Ruven’s creativity until he explained the circumstances of moving from Israel to England  and then the United States. Along his adventures Ruven displays an amazing gift of “going for it” experimenting and trying out different modes of expression that paved the way from Puppetry to Performance Art and ultimately storytelling.

My Guest Billy Maxwell Taylor is a Dance Theater Maker and Ambient Dance Artist. I met him in the Forest of Dean through my connection to Actor & Filmmaker Henry McGrath as I was getting to know the Eden’s Cave Theater & Film Company. Billy is both a calm and joyful presence in my experience. It was delightful to get to know Billy’s influences and I would say (spoiler alert) you may want to have pen & paper handy to capture all of the amazing references that have inspired Billy in this interview. Billy describes how many aspects of Japanese culture have come to influence his artistry. I so appreciate Billy’s honesty and his attention to burnout which is affecting so many young people as they try to keep pace with change and modern life.

I met my guest Jude Williams as a participant on a Discipline of Freedom workshop on the Scottish Island of Lismore many years ago. In my opinion Jude has a gloriously expressive beautiful singing voice. My main memory of that shared experience was hearing Jude sing the Sondheim song Being Alive over and over again exploring different prompts and approaches, sometimes in joy and sometimes in tears and sometimes in joyful tears! Jude has a very wonderful and dynamically beautiful voice. Recently I heard lots of positive feedback about Jude’s theatrical offering called Chunky Jewelry and I realized how much I wanted to add her voice to the Creative Engagement podcast. I’m so glad I followed that instinct because Jude has been investigating creativity and engagement deeply. I especially appreciated her ideas about how to know when her work feels satisfying.

I have to say I was so impressed when my guest Nemanja Kovač Barbarossa reached out to me about being interviewed to talk about his new book Visions from the Unconscious. Nemanja is the founder of the emerging artistic movement  Arawnonciousness (A-RAW). Nemanja describes his experience of discovering how to investigate his unconscious through line drawing and then later larger painted canvases.
