We met through a mutual friend a wonderful singer and musical arranger who very sadly died at the very beginning of the pandemic. His name was Stephen Henry McCoy. This episode is dedicated to Henry’s memory. Included in this podcast is a song that Henry and I recorded on my album Enlightened Madness called Slow Blue. I've created a memorial page to honor Henry's voice and share some performances:https://www.danielrmandel.com/rememberance

My guest is Hanna Ojala.

Hanna is a self-made musician, poet, filmmaker and movement researcher from Finland who has found her way of creative expression through experimental music, dance and video poetry. She savors verbalizing actual events in an abstract way as well as describing the visceral effects of inner emotions – making invisible visible and visible indefinite.

This Episode's Guest: Nathan Otto

Nathan Otto is a poet, activist, entrepreneur and humanitarian. He is the founder of the Safe Conflict Project, a five-year international project to foster collaboration among peacemakers, governments, business and community leaders to end and prevent violent conflicts worldwide. He served on the Board of the Alliance for Peacebuilding in Washington, DC for five years. Mr. Otto built and sold two technology companies from 1993 to 2005. Today he is the co-founder of Pine Creek, a renewable energy company. Mr. Otto holds a B.A. in Mathematics with Honors from Wesleyan University. He is the grandson of Bill and Vieve Gore, founders of W. L. Gore and Associates, a family-owned global manufacturing company best known for Gore-Tex outdoor fabric.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This episodes Creative Expression: Nathan reads an excerpt from his book Reality Zero, called Aesthetic Agency.

Aesthetic Agency   Aesthetic means preference without defense. Irreducible feral truth felt through without fear or couth.  Aesthetic is a crisis of rightness.  We all know what rightness is, what it feels, how it smooths a caress of isness into a toss of experience. When apprehended it gongs the heart of unquestionable certainty, not just strong but immovable eternity. Aesthetic agency adds the urgency of making that rightness burgeon. Behind any reason or why rises that crisis of acausal choice. Shedding developmental snake-skins of childhood and adolescence, aesthetic agency wakens fully adult. Deepening below powerless strategies of reactive collapse or narrow aggression, larger than submissive child-mind, deeper than adolescent rebellion, this agency makes what is right and non-cooperates with the rest. A thrilling thrum of just-because, aesthetic agency electrifies body and spirit, muses mind to heights of line and form, from nothing born. Matured into aesthetic agency, the complete woman or man, the spiritual adult, is unexploitable, powerful, aware and awake. Fully cognizant of chosen values, transparent to truth, smoothly moving with circumstance, fearless and vulnerable, artistic killers, compassionate and well-armed, sexy as fuck to each other, scary as hell to the old dead order, these aesthetic agents are the vanguard of humanity, the healers, the leaders, the nation-re-builders, the world-regulators. These engineers of peace, poetic truth-tellers, raucous adults—they bar none, stoop to none, bow to none. They do what they are told by spirit alone, in fierce communion, with unwavering cooperation, with great love and little compromise.  We die but cannot be killed. We include everyone. We know the ways and the means. Become one of us. You are very much in need.  Awaken your aesthetic agency.

My guest this episode is Antonio Aguilar-Karayianni

Originally from Guatemala, Antonio has been a community organizer and social services provider since his arrival to the United States at age 17. He has delved into every creative expression he’s had access to in his personal life, and even became an Expressive Arts therapist to bring creativity into the process of supporting others through their healing journeys.

Antonio's statement of encouragement English translation:

Don’t pay attention to those antiquated ideas that link creativity to talent and art. Creativity is how you do everything in your life, and how you do it “your way”. That unique way that comes from deep within you and from how you see the world, and it is your gift to the world and to those who are around you. Find daily new ways of expressing yourself, to put into color, shape, sound, images or movement what you carry inside you. That could be your legacy, what you leave behind to those around you and to the next generations… we never know where the path of creative exploration can lead us! Remember that a mind that stops creating (and to create something new, one must also learn something new), starts to die.
