In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman sit down with Jeff Whittum, a salvaged metal artist based in East Kingston, NH. His sculptures include materials like cutlery, clockwork, bike chains, metal from antiques, tools, and many more unique items, and his subject matter includes birds, animals and human figures.

Jeff has always had a creative eye, but recently found his love of sculpting only five years ago! And in that time his work has been featured on NH Chronicle twice, sold many of his sculptures in the region, and been hired for an array of custom installations. In this interview we dive into the various materials Jeff uses to create his pieces, the hazards that come with welding metal, and the physical mechanics of how some of his pieces stand.

In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman talk with producer, playwright, director, actor, and dancer Najee Brown. Najee’s story is incredible — he moved to New Hampshire in fall 2019, trading New York City and his gall bladder for his wife and an opportunity at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre in Portsmouth, NH.

Najee helms the new Sol Series at the Seacoast Rep and this is where he’s unveiled his plays “Stokely and Martin” and “Naveah’s Brother”. Launched in January 2021, Sol Series is focused on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color narratives. Najee also teaches step at The Block Collaborative (a special thank you to Anthony Bounphakhum, the star of episode 59, who introduced us to Najee)!

In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman chat with artist and educator Jason Bagatta. Jason’s journey as an artist began with a drawing contest on the back of a cereal, evolved to “magic pennies” (you’ll have to tune in to hear the story), and now Jason is founding Art House Studios School for Drawing and Painting in Manchester, NH. Back in the day when Jason was Laura’s professor, he famously told her “it’s the process, not the product” and this philosophy continues to guide them both today.

See a sample of Jason’s work and learn more about Art House Studios School for Drawing and Painting at www.arthousestudios.org and find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Arthousejb7.
