In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman sit down with artist Aris Moore! Using a variety of mediums, including some more out of the box ones, Aris Moore draws mostly invented beings or creatures that are whimsical, strange, silly, serious, emotional, and oddly relatable. In our conversation, we talk with Aris about how her creatures came to be, how she approaches the business side of being an artist, and how she’s coping with the state of the world.
Aris is the 2024 winner of the Piscataqua Region Artist Advancement Grant from the NH Charitable Foundation! The grant, if you’re not familiar, is available to all Piscataqua Region artists and recognizes the important contribution of working artists to the cultural life of the region by providing an annual financial award to promote the artistic growth of visual artists and craftspeople. Jackie is a painter, printmaker, and creative entrepreneur from the Lakes Region. Her work is vibrant and whimsical with an emphasis on nature and all things New Hampshire.
In this episode, we talk about Jackie’s identity as a printmaker, the Chicken People Club, and plane crashes (yes, that was a surprise to us, too!). Jackie was raised in a family where art and creativity were always encouraged, and her upbringing — including bucolic New England landscapes and her grandparents’ chickens — are a major influence! Jackie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New England College’s Institute of Art and Design.

For the fifth year, Creative Guts invites creatives to participate in an international tiny art exchange. Participants will create an original piece of tiny art (5” x 7” or smaller, in any ratio) to mail to an address we supply from another participant. Everyone will send a piece of art and receive a piece of art from another creative in the world. This is a great way to connect, be inspired, and show us your creative guts!
New this year, we are thrilled to announce a new zine component of the tiny art exchange, made possible with support from the Currier Museum of Art. (Learn more about them at www.currier.org.) This publication will archive and celebrate the art exchanged. Each participant in the Tiny Art Exchange is invited to be in the zine, and will receive one free physical copy of the publication.
If you’d like to participate, please head over to www.CreativeGutsPodcast.com/tae for all the details. The deadline to sign up is Monday, April 21, 2025. In the following week, you’ll receive a mailing address in your inbox. We ask that you please mail your artwork to the address provided by Saturday, May 3, 2025.
The Tiny Art Exchange and Zine program is free to join. While there is no fee to participate, you are welcome to make a suggested donation of $5 to Creative Guts through our website. www.CreativeGutsPodcast.com.

In this episode, you’ll hear Zach Ellis discuss "Nevertheless", an exhibition currently on view in the Bernier Room until May 2, 2025. Everyone is welcome! The Bernier Room is located in the James W. Foley Memorial Community Center, 150 Wakefield Street, Rochester, NH 03867. Visit www.rochestermfa.org to learn more.
Zach Ellis is a photographer whose work navigates the human, natural, and abstract. Through his artistic practice, he seeks to deepen his awareness of what already holds his attention. At its core, his work embraces duality—both/and—grappling with contradictions in the world and within himself. With a camera in hand, everything becomes a reflective surface, a mirror to the soul, shining back what he hopes—against hope—to see more clearly. Raised in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Zach has traveled the country and now calls southern New Hampshire home. Visit https://zachellisphotography.com/ to visit his website and learn more.
