Creative Riding EP013 - Handwriting, Hand Signs, Handkerchiefs

Listen Later

Hello! Hello!
Welcome to Episode 13.
Is handwriting a fundamental skill anymore? Do we still need it in a time when everything has a keyboard attached to it? The current common core strategies that are being taught in schools don’t even address cursive writing anymore because, like calligraphy, it’s not a necessary or efficient form of communication.
In the first segment we examine writing, and compare cursive writing in particular to motorcycles, since they both started their rise and evolution at roughly the same time.
Handwriting teaches the fundamental skills of letter formation and gives each letter a meaning, rather than just learning where it’s position is on the keyboard. Imagine what the ABCs would sound like if a person who has only typed sang them. It would be the QWEs instead.
We think that rudimentary motorcycles, like handwriting, give beginning riders and mechanics alike a good starting place to learn the basic skills and relationships that technologically-laden bikes might not. Imagine how good you would be if you first learned to ride well on a simple bike with no riding aids.
In the second segment we do our best to talk about hand signals, and keep it interesting. Did you know that BMW riders have their own secret codex of waves?
BMW riders have a secret code:
G 650 or single F 650 riders (basically any thumper) : arm out at 45 degree angle with index finger pointing toward ground
F (parallel twins) : Arm out at 60 degrees, Middle + Ring fingers extended
R (boxer motors) : Arm out at 90 degrees and Index + pinky fingers (cornu) extended
K motors (all 1100-1600) : Arm straight and pointing forward above fairing or mirror with 4 fingers extended and pointing up as well.
Finally, we think that women can replace dropping a Handkerchief with dropping the Hammer when it comes to gaining a man’s attention these days. What’s more enticing than a fast woman? Maybe her motorcycles stories!!
Finally we wrap up with our weekly movie review.
Have a good weekend!
