  • The Comedic Paths of Creativity | Lauren Matsubara's Journey Through Writing and Comedy Improv

Join us on this episode of Creator/Shift as we dive into the multifaceted world of writing with our guest, Lauren Matsubara. Lauren explores her journey from literary prose and memoir essays in graduate school to her current passion for writing comedic sketches and fan fiction. She shares insights into how improv classes have shaped her approach to fiction writing, the challenges of balancing a full-time job, personal life, and creative pursuits, and how she maintains her well-being amidst her busy schedule. Whether you're a writer, a creative professional, or just someone looking for inspiration, this episode offers valuable perspectives on managing creativity and life’s demands.

    Some Questions I ask:

    • What creative medium do you most like writing for? (Stage, screen, scripts, improv, literature, audio dramas)
    • How do you navigate working in multiple disciplines?
    • PROCESS AND DEVELOPMENT: What did you need to learn when you switched from writing prose to writing comedy sketches?
    • What have you learned about writing comedy?

Impact of Improv on Everyday Life| Lauren: "I think taking improv classes, at least for me, has helped in all areas of life, because it is such a skill that you have to, you need it everywhere. Everywhere. In every situation, emergency or not, you need to be able to improvise just to go with the flow. I think it makes you more easygoing in general."

Feeling the inspiration? Share this slice of creativity with someone who’d appreciate it! 🌟

  • From Filmmaking to Fire Spinning | Cinematographer Marshall Fine

In this episode, join host Erika Christie as she chats with videography professional Marshall Fine. Marshall shares his history in film and video production, culminating from a childhood influence to his formal education at Chattahoochee Tech, where he honed skills in various production aspects from lighting to post-production. Marshall talks candidly about his passion for capturing dynamic scenes, from action-packed skiing adventures to mesmerizing fire spinning art. He discusses the importance of safety within the fire community and the challenges of filming with high frame rates to capture the perfect slow-motion effects. This episode promises to give a glimpse into an early-career filmmaker and what he is doing to up skill himself and get his name out.

Erika Christie- Collaboration Across Creative Fields:

“A filmmaker comes to you and is like, “Hey, Marshall, I need help with something.” And then they go ‘bam, bam, bam’ and tell you exactly what they want. But for someone who's listening, who's a graphic designer or who's a musician or who's a dancer, and they ask, “Hey, Marshall, I need something filmed.” And then you start asking them questions, they may not know how to answer because they don't speak the language of film."

    Some Questions I ask:

    • Do you have a filming preference? Live events, shooting, editing, graphics, BTS filming? etc.
    • What got you into filmmaking in the first place?
    • PROCESS AND DEVELOPMENT: What questions do you ask yourself about new projects? And what do you ask the requester about what they want?
    • What are the simplest things a non-video person should know to work with a filmmaker?

In this episode you will learn:

    • Marshall’s preference for being part of a production team
    • Reflection of past projects with nonprofits and their impact on his growth
    • Challenges faced during solo projects and resource management
    • The role of live event tracking and adapting to unpredictable scenarios
    • Exploration of Marshall's content and YouTube channel and specific interests in fire spinning videos

  • Stephen Hull | Mastering Graphic Design in a Digital World | Skills | Tech Tuesdays

Stephen Hull is a Graphic Designer and Art Director who creates visually stunning designs that effectively communicate key messages and optimize the user experience. In addition to his design work he also had the immense pleasure of working with Erika in a previous lifetime. That's right, Stephen was Erika's boss once upon a time. It was my pleasure to have a great chat with Stephen (or "Hull" as I solely call him) about his background and experiences in Graphic Design.

Erika Christie: Paying for Expertise, Not Time: "if someone asks you to do something and you can do it in 20 minutes, and they go, “well, that only took you 20 minutes, I should only pay you for 20 minutes.” But if it took you 20 years to be able to be talented enough to only do it in 20 minutes, then you're paying for the 20 years of experience. You're not paying for the 20 minutes that it took to do the job.""

    Some Questions I ask:

    • What are some of the skills a Graphic Designer needs to practice in order to get good at?
    • How easy is it to transfer Graphic Design skills to other artistic mediums (photography, animation)?
    • Is it a requirement for a Graphic Designer to have a degree?

  • Sam Aluyon | Unleashing the Magic of Musical Improv

Welcome to Creator/Shift, where today we're diving deep into the world of musical improvisation with the multifaceted Sam Aluyon. A master of instruments ranging from guitar to keys to tuba, Sam brings a rich background in classical and R&B music to his current passion for musical improv. Hosted by Erika Christie, also a musician, this episode promises to unpack the intricate dance between technology, creativity, and the timeless human touch in the art of music making. Tune in for an enlightening discussion on the intersections of music, improvisation, and technology right here on Creator/Shift.

    Some Questions I ask:

    • If someone needs music for any project, what questions do you ask yourself and what questions do you ask them to find out what they need?
    • Can you teach someone rhythm?
    • What is musical improvisation?

In this episode you will learn:

    • Choosing the Right Music for the Moment: "But if something's happening where it's exciting and it's like, the best day ever, then obviously I'm not going to go for that juxtaposition of, like, a different type of a different type of, like, sound. I want to go for something that's a little bit more happy."
    • Embracing Collective Growth in Leadership: "I don't think you have to be an absolute expert at something to run a class, because even when I'm directing, I've done directing longer than I've done anything else in my whole life. And even when I'm directing, I'm still asking for other people's opinions, bringing other people in. Like, I like learning and, you know, growing myself while I'm doing something. So I think you should do the class and get the best people that you can and make it a collective thing so that you're all kind of moving forward together. That's what I mean."

What is the magic behind creative collaboration? How does a filmmaker work with a musician? A graphic designer speak to a voice over artist? A photographer collaborate with a writer? Or a choreographer work with an illustrator?

As creatives we have unique production requirements and a specific language for each of our disciplines, but our skills are much more closely connected than what we may realize.

Our focus here is on learning new tools, skills, and procedures to tell a better story.

learn how to get your ideas across clearly and succinctly, and how to categorize and utilize different types of resources.

Learn to shift from writing screenplays to writing scrips for audio drams or comic books. Use your filmmaking skills to write a novel, storyboard a design project, or transfer into gaming. Propel your musician skills into the film or theater industry, or collaborate with street artists and dancers.

A lot of these artistic mediums I have quite a bit of experience in - video photography writing podcasts multicam setups - and some of them I’ll be learning right along with you as we bring in an expert. You may find your one true passion, you will CERTAINLY gain a better understanding of how different art disciplines work together.

Up skill yourself, learn tips and tricks, and find out exactly what you need to know to work with creatives outside of your medium to have the best collaboration possible!

We’ll be coming to you with Tech Tuesdays and creative episodes on Thursdays.
