  • Creature Comforts | Mississippi's Relationships with Wild Turkeys

On Creature Comforts, Kevin Farrell is joined by Dr. Troy Majure, veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center in Jackson and Libby Hartfield retired director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

An interesting distinction to be made about Mississippians’ relationships to wild turkeys is in the two different ways they’re viewed. The first, as a large game bird to be hunted. And second, as a beautiful animal to be observed by wildlife- and bird-watchers. Our guest for today is Adam Butler, Wild Turkey Coordinator for the MS Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks. He’s here to inform us about both relationships we have with these fascinating, free-flying fowls.

  • Creature Comforts | White-Tailed Deer

On Creature Comforts, Kevin Farrell is joined by Dr. Troy Majure, veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center in Jackson and Libby Hartfield retired director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

A little over a month ago, Creature Comforts had a conversation about Urban Wildlife, which included the topic of deer – white-tailed deer specifically. They are dispersed all across the state in both our rural and more urban areas. And while in that previous conversation we couldn’t get into the topic of deer at-length, they are our sole subject for today. Pierce Young from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks joins us today to help us understand more about these creatures that share Mississippi with us – from the green fields to the gray buildings.

  • Creature Comforts | Squirrels

On Creature Comforts, Kevin Farrell is joined by Dr. Troy Majure, veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center in Jackson and Libby Hartfield retired director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

Many of Mississippi’s wild animals are elusive. Some you never see and some you see very rarely. Our subject for today’s show, however, can be found daily in all parts of the state. They’re small, brown or gray, and athletic little creatures. You guessed it, we’re discussing Mississippi squirrels today! We’ll be joined by our friend Rick Hamrick who is the Small Game Program Coordinator at the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

  • Creature Comforts | Hellbenders and Herpetology

On Creature Comforts, Kevin Farrell is joined by Dr. Troy Majure, veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center in Jackson and Libby Hartfield retired director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

Mississippi is home to many different types of animals, some that fly, some that swim, and some that creep along the ground. Those “creeping animals,” or reptiles and amphibians, are the subject for today’s show. We are joined by Conservation biologist and Herpetologist at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, Emily Field. She’ll tell us about the creeping creatures that call Mississippi home, and her special interest in the elusive Hellbender.

  • Creature Comforts | Urban Wildlife and Deer

On Creature Comforts, Kevin Farrell is joined by Dr. Troy Majure, veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center in Jackson and Libby Hartfield retired director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

When people bring up wildlife in Mississippi, naturally you think of animals that live in rural woodsy areas. Mississippi is of course, predominantly rural, but we do have our urban areas. So what happens to animals when they get into these urban areas? Do they belong there? Our guest for today’s show is Adam Rohnke, an Urban Wildlife Specialist, who is here to tell us about what these animals are doing living in places like Tupelo, Southaven, and even the heart of Jackson.
