This kind of love and knowledge of us from God our Creator leads us to significant trust and dependence, “Lord, search me, know my heart, my anxious thoughts, find any offensive way in me and lead me in your way!” All ours for the asking, the receiving, the loving, the living. Who do you love? What do you love most dearly? We were created for love – made to love somebody – and everyone is looking for love. Sounds like a song, (because it is) “Can anybody find me somebody to love?”
In Psalm 63, the songwriter sings about the love he has found… in God. Yearnings met, soul satisfied, “Because your love is better than life my lips will glorify you… my heart will pursue you… I’ll love you as long as I live!”
Sounds like the songwriter has found somebody to love, because God loves him. Psalm 63. See you Sunday!

Summer message series has begun, as we move from Psalm 1 (last week) to Psalm 19 (this week) – an easy transition! Last week we saw God’s wisdom revealed in the fabric of the creation – from the universe to the human body, in both the natural and moral order. God’s design reveals the wisdom of God in his created designs and plans for the world. One area of wisdom where God’s design and created purposes are revealed, experienced and seen is the blessings and curses that come from our thoughts and behaviors, the pathways of choices and directions of our will. God reveals one thing for sure in Psalm 1: ‘Blessed is the one who delights (rejoices) and meditates (thoughts and actions included) on God’s word and ways. That one is like a tree planted by streams of water… produces fruit, leaves are always green, there is blessing!”
What better place to go from here (Psalm 1) than there (Psalm 19). Psalm 19 reveals God’s two great ‘reads’ of revelation: Creation and Scripture. What more does anyone need to read? If you are a part of a summer book reading club – these two are a must!
Psalm 19, a beautifully written song of God’s two great books of revelation, leads us to a surprising end: asking for forgiveness and a heart focused on the worship of God.

About a year ago, Ardith Rietema said to me, “You should preach on your top 10 favorite texts from the Bible.” I’ve been thinking about what she said, and here we go – sounds like a fun summer – and every message promises to be interactive and engaging! We begin in the Old Testament with Psalms 1, 19, 63, and 139, moving to Genesis 1-2, Jeremiah 9, Ezekiel 47 and Isaiah 61. Then, to the New Testament with Mark 7, Colossians 1, Philippians 3, Romans 12, and Matthew 5-7 (Sermon on the Mount). There you go – Top 10 (actually 13…) with a couple of guest speakers along the way.
We begin with wisdom – Psalm 1 – a good place to start. Let’s start on this summer path together.

In John 13, Jesus shows the disciples ‘the full extent of his love.’ How? By getting up from his place of honor as Master, Teacher, and Lord, taking off his outer garment, wrapping a towel around his waist, and washing and drying each of the disciples feet. As Master, Teacher, and Lord, he takes on the form of a servant.

When he finished he asks a probing question, “Do you understand what I have done for you?” Then he gives them a life-changing call, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” Followed by a powerful promise, “Now that you know this, you will be blessed if you do this.”

Sunday we look at a powerful living illustration of the wedding of Grace and Truth – that is Jesus! Some teachers of the law bring a woman caught in adultery before Jesus, stones in hand, ready to stone her to death, seeking Jesus approval while at the same time desiring to trap him and discredit him before the crowd gathered there.

Jesus is masterful in his words and actions. With two simple phrases, he dismantles their self-righteous and judgmental attitudes and disarms the stones from their grasp. So much to explore, questions abound, mystery of truth and grace wedded together in this story affirming Jesus as ‘the way, the truth, and the life.’ In the story Jesus essentially is saying, “I am the forgiveness of sins… and the offer of a transformed life of walking in holiness.’

On the other hand, it’s for all who hear and believe – inclusive to everyone to engage by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ.
