In February 2023, 35-year-old Matthew Overby — a Chattanooga father of six — was shot nine times as he sat in his own pickup truck. Prosecutors say the man who killed him, Jamal Adams, had stabbed Overby months earlier — and murdered him to keep him from testifying in that case. On July 17th, a Hamilton County jury convicted Adams of first-degree murder and sentenced him to life without parole. Then he flipped the defense table, screamed for his mother, and had to be wrestled down by court officers. Adams is now facing five new criminal charges from the outburst. Vanessa walks you through the case, the trial, and the courtroom scene no one saw coming.

This afternoon, Vanessa is bringing you a preview from another Crime House show: Murder: True Crime Stories, hosted by Carter Roy. In this episode, Carter traces the story of Gordon Stewart Northcott — a 19-year-old who, in 1926, convinced his parents to buy him three acres outside Los Angeles under the pretense of raising chickens. What he actually built there became one of the most disturbing crime scenes in California history. Part 1 covers Northcott's troubled childhood and the desert property where his violence would soon spiral out of control.
Please note: this episode contains descriptions of sexual violence, torture, and murder, and may not be suitable for all audiences. For Part 2, follow Murder: True Crime Stories on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

In April 2011, 27-year-old real estate agent Ashley Okland was alone at an open house in West Des Moines, Iowa when someone walked in, shot her twice, and walked out. The case stayed cold for nearly 15 years. This spring, a grand jury indicted 53-year-old Kristin Ramsey — a longtime local who worked for the developer that built the townhome. Ramsey has pleaded not guilty. Last Friday, her attorneys filed a 44-page motion to dismiss, arguing the entire case rests on a single neighbor whose story kept changing over 15 years. Vanessa walks you through the case, the indictment, and the motion that could throw it all out.

In 1990, 22-year-old Pamela Smart's husband was shot in the head inside their New Hampshire home. Investigators soon learned Pamela — a media coordinator at a local high school — had been sleeping with a 15-year-old student, and had talked him into killing her husband. Her trial was the first murder trial in the country ever televised gavel to gavel. She got life without parole. This past week, at 58, Pamela was back in court arguing that the transcripts of the secret recordings that convicted her were inaccurate — and that she deserves a new trial. Vanessa walks you through the case, the trial, and what's happening now.

This afternoon, Vanessa is bringing you an episode from another one of her shows: Conspiracy Theories, Cults, and Crimes. In this episode: "The Disney Machine." Walt Disney didn't just build a theme park — he built a system of total control and convinced the world to call it magic. Vanessa unpacks the nine-acre tunnel network beneath the parks, the 56 years Disney ran its own government in Florida, and the documented fact that Walt himself was an FBI informant — separating the Disney myths from the documented conspiracies. On an October night in 2022, 21-year-old Grace Jennings was killed with a sword inside a Santa Fe garage. The woman who wielded the blade — Kiara McCulley — has already pleaded guilty. But her boyfriend, Isaac Apodaca, never touched it. Prosecutors argued he didn't need to: he'd convinced 19-year-old Kiara they were part of a secret society that hunted down "bad people," and that killing Grace was how she'd earn her place. Last week, a Santa Fe jury agreed, convicting Apodaca of first-degree murder. He now faces a mandatory life sentence.

In July 2023, 28-year-old professional dancer O'Shae Sibley was voguing to Beyoncé's "Renaissance" with his friends at a Brooklyn gas station when a 17-year-old approached them, hurled anti-Black and homophobic slurs, and stabbed O'Shae in the chest. He was dead before the night was over. This past week, three years later, a Brooklyn judge sentenced Dmitriy Popov to 20 years in prison for what a jury found was a hate crime. Vanessa walks you through O'Shae's life, the trial that split down the middle, and the sentence that finally landed.
