section 4 of crime its causes and remedies by cesar lombroso this is the provox recording or with librivox according to the public domain for more information of the volunteer please visit librivox.org recorded by leon harvey chapter four civilization barbarism aggregations of population the press new kinds of crime

sub chapter 26 civilization and barbarism among the numerous social problems there is one especially who is certain a complete solution and concerns us greatly is that the influence of civilization upon crime and sanity if we judge by statistics alone we shall conclude that problem is already solved for every country of europe except england we find that crime and insanity are each year increasing out a proportion of the growth of the population a footnote is displayed on the page in france from 1826 to 1837 there was one person indicted to each 100 of the population in 1868 the indictments had reached one to fifty-five to foul trade the statistic 1840 block l europolitik 1870. from 1825 to 1838 the indictments excluding political crimes and fiscal misdemeanors rose from 57 470 to 80 920 in 1838 the end diamonds increased from 237 to the 100 000 to 375 in 1847 to 480 and from 1854-55 to 1866 they sank to 389 to increase the gain to 517 in 1874 and to 552 in 1889. there was then an increase of about 133 percent in 50 years surely france criminal page 10. other tables displayed on the page displaying data for years the commission rate the number of habits and indictments in austria and england and wales from 1805 to 1841 the population increased 49 percent the crime six times more than the population in some countries one month ago for example the population increased about 128 crimes 720 percent aberdeen discord 1876. in italy there were from 1850 to 1859 16 173 diamonds for serious crimes and 7535 convictions from 1860 to 1869 23 854 indictments and 10 701 convictions from 1863 to 1869 crimes increased one-tenth the population about one twentieth cursio opposite but mesodeglia rightly observes in this connection how easy it is to make a mistake and attempt to solve on the basis of statistics alone complex problems into which many factors enter at the same time the continual increase of crime and insanity can in fact be explained by changes in civil and penal laws by a great tendency to bring accusations by the easy access to a signs of insane and by the greater activity of the police one thing appears certain civilization and barbarism alike possess christ peculiar to them barbarism by identity the moral sensibilities diminishes the horror of homicide which is freely admired as a heroic act by making revenge of duty a confusing might with right it increases crimes of blood and encourages associations and malfactories just as among the insane develops religious mania dermatomania and imitative insanity on the other hand family ties are stronger while sexual assault and insane ambition less frequent and consequently parasite infanticide are theft or less frequent the types of civilization which man is israel produced according to giugliamo ferrero are two the type characterized by violence and they're characterized by fraud they are distinguished by the form which the struggle for existence takes in the primitive civilization the struggle is carried on purely by force and wealth and power are changed by arms at the expense either of foreigners or of weaker fellow citizens commercial competition between two peoples is carried on through armies and fleets this is to say by the violent expulsion of competitors from coveted markets judicial contests are decided by the duel in a civilization characterized by fraud on the other hand the struggle for...

chapter 18 of the pink shop this is a librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org recording by stella june the pink shop by fergus hume chapter 18 a legal opinion

it set a great deal for audrey's presence of mind that she lay quietly where she was and did not at once leap from her bed to denounce eddie vale but the girl although she appeared delicate and was inexperienced had a common sense way of looking at things which helped her greatly in this emergency she rapidly reviewed the situation and saw that it would be wiser for the present to hold her tongue when she laid the matter before ralph it would be time enough to consider what was the best course to pursue it was necessary to obtain further proofs of vale's guilt as for the moment it rested merely on the statement of badora and if bedoura changed her mind and became reconciled to eddie she might deny that she had made any remark about the clock finally seeing that she was indebted to her aunt for a night's lodging if for nothing else audrey did not wish to make trouble in the pink shop already the murder had given the place a bad name and if there was any more scandal madame coralie's business would be ruined entirely but audrey could rest no more and when she heard madame coralie go into the still room to talk with her scampish husband she quietly rose and closed the bedroom door then she dressed rapidly and soon came out looking much her usual self although she was decidedly pale her aunt was still talking to eddie and had just handed him a letter the scampish husband looked more pretty and dandified than ever and threw a glance of leering admiration at the charming newcomer when audrey remembered that badora accused him of strangling her mother she could scarcely address him politely yet she was forced to do so for the sake of appearance as madame coralie introduced her to him miss branwyn this is my husband mr edmund vale i hope you are well miss brownwin said mr vale politely and bowed in a most deferential manner he even held out his hand but audrey declined to see it she could not bring herself to greet him in this way i am quite well mr vale she said coldly thanks to a good night's rest you are stopping here miss branwyn mind your own business eddie snapped madame coralie shortly you have nothing to do with my customers miss brownwin is stopping here for treatment so say no more about it take that letter to sir joseph branwyn at once audrey started and looked at her aunt to my father yes said madame coralie arranging her yashmak i have written to sir joseph asking him to send your boxes here as your treatment will take some time but will my father send my boxes asked audrey nervously madame coralie gave her a warning glance as eddie's terubic face was alive with curiosity of course he will miss branwyn said the proprietors of the pink shop easily he knows that the ladies cannot do without at least a dozen frocks never fear she nodded encouragingly i shall send you back to camden hill as plump as a partridge if i may be permitted a remark said eddie impudently miss branwyn does not require figure treatment she is perfection and he grinned eddie you can go said madame coralie quietly and pointed imperatively to the door lose no time all revoir miss brownwin said the rogue and walked out of the still room as delicately as a gag before his execution what a horrid man said audrey involuntarily then colored when aware of her remark i beg your pardon aunt flora i forgot he is your husband i never can forget it said madame coralie calmly and you are quite right my dear eddie is a horrid young man conceited and impudent whose one idea in life is to hunt women and spend money that's two ideas though isn't...

a steady april rain was soaking the earth it hadn't been bad to drive through until dusk came in the half light it was hard to see the road the rain was heavy enough to reflect my headlights back against the windshield my mileage on the speedometer told me i couldn't be very far from hillston when i saw the motel sign ahead on the right i slowed down it looked fairly new i turned in the parking area was paved with those round brown pebbles that crunch under the tires i parked as close to the office as i could get and ran from the car into the office a woman with the bright cold eyes and thin sharp movements of a water bird rented me a room far back from the highway sound she said the place was just four miles from the hillston city limits once i saw the room i decided that it would do it would be a good place to stay while i did what had to be done in hillston i stretched out on the bed and wondered if i had been smart to use my right name on the motel register but if i could find the money there would be no one to say that i was the one who had taken it and using my right name wouldn't make any difference at all when at last the rain eased up i went and found a small roadside restaurant the girl behind the counter told me where i could buy a bottle of liquor she seemed open to any invitation to help me drink it up but though she was reasonably pretty i was not interested i had this other thing on my mind and i wanted to go back alone and have some drinks and think about it and wonder how i could do it maybe you saw pictures of us the ones who were really bad off when the prisoners were exchanged i was one of the litter cases my stomach had stopped digesting the slop they fed us and i was down to 93 pounds one more week and i would have been buried up there beyond the river like so many others were i was in bad shape not only physically but mentally i was too sick to be flown back memory was all shot i went right into hospital and they started feeding me through a tube it was during the months in the military hospital back in this country that i began to sort things out and began to remember more of the details about timmy wharton of hillston when the intelligent people had interrogated me i had told them how timmy died but nothing more than that i didn't tell him any of the stuff timmy had told me we were both captured at the same time in that action near the reservoir i'd known him casually he was in a different platoon we were together most of the time after we were captured enough has already been written about how it was it wasn't good that prison camp experience can change your attitude toward life and toward yourself it did that to timmy warden his one thought was to survive it was that way with all of us but timmy seemed more of a fanatic than anybody else he had to get back he told me about it one night that was after he'd gotten pretty weak i was still in fair shape he told me about it in the dark whispering to me i couldn't see his face tell i've got to get back and straighten something out i've got to every time i think about it i'm ashamed i thought i was being smart i thought i was getting what i wanted maybe i've grown up now i've got to get it straightened out what was it you wanted i wanted it and i got it but i can't use it now i wanted her too and had her but she's no good to me now i'm not following this so good timmy he told me the story then he had been in business with his brother george warden george was older by six years george took him in as a partner george had a flare for salesmanship and promotion timmy was good on the books as he had a...
