Tara and I chat about how Huntington’s changed her life. Tara’s Huntington journey began with her Mother. We talk about how her life changed when her mother’s was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease. And when doctors first talked about predictive testing with Tara, she knew she wanted to know if she was a carrier of the mutated gene.

During this episode we talk about her journey through predictive testing, and how her outlook on life changed after receiving her results.

Welcome to the 3rd episode of the Cross Border Interviews: Huntington’s Awareness Week

I’m Christopher Brown the Host of the show and today we chat with Heather Dodds.

Heather is the President of the Southern Alberta Chapter of the Huntington Society of Canada. We talk about her father who was diagnosed with Huntington 7 years ago, how a Huntington Society Conference in Halifax changed need to give back to the community, and we also talk about how the Southern Alberta Chapter helps families who have had their life changed because of Huntington.

To be upfront, I was unsure about if Heather would want to talk about her feelings desire to get tested after her father found out, and it wasn’t until after the interview was completed did she told me she was surprised that I hadn’t asked her about it. I asked if her she was willing to chat and she was happy to oblige.

Welcome to a Special Week Long Series of the Cross Border Interview Podcast.

May is Huntington disease Awareness Month around the world.

Huntington disease (HD) is a hereditary, neurodegenerative disease with no cure. About one in every 7,000 Canadians has HD and approximately one in every 5,500 is at-risk of developing the disease.

Many more are touched by HD whether as a caregiver, a family member, or a friend.

Huntington disease is often described as having the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS – simultaneously.

As the disease progresses, a person with Huntington’s become less able to manage movements, recall events, make decisions and control emotions. The disease leads to incapacitation and, eventually, death.

This week we talk with doctors on the front line of Huntington’s Disease, a genetic counsellor, representatives from the Huntington Society of Canada, a social worker who works with family members across Alberta, the President of the Southern Alberta Chapter of the Huntington’s Society of Canada. We also talk to family members who have lost loved ones to this disease.

Linda’s path to elected politics is fascinating, from working as a volunteer in the 1979 federal election to running herself in 2012 for the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta. Linda’s Path brought her to the heart of federal and provincial politics in Calgary.

We talk about here time in Ottawa, Her work for the PCAA, and her time in the Alberta Legislature. We also talk about that nail bitter of an election in 2015.
