Luke 4:1-14
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the jordan and was let by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.
The designation 40 is used many times in scripture (40 days of rain, 40 days Moses spent on Mt. Sinai, 40 years wandering of Israel, 40 days of Goliath’s taunting, 40 days Elijah was in the wilderness).
He fasted 40 days - he was at a place of vulnerability and weakness.
Satan is real - a created being; a rebellious/fallen angel. While an adversary (fighting against God and those who follow God), Satan is limited. He is not omniscient, nor is he omnipotent, nor is he omnipresent. Those qualities are limited to God alone.
The verb, “to be tempted” describes a continuous action - relentless.
As we look further into this passage on the Tempation of Jesus we find 3 Crucial areas of temptation:
The Self Gratification of our Physical needs and desires
The Self Exaltation through Pride
The Self Protection by use of Power and Control
