If you want to experience the life of Jesus, you have to adopt the lifestyle of Jesus.

God made a special day for his favorite part of creation, humanity. The sabbath was made for us. It’s a gift, but for only those who open it. It’s a day of delight! The Sabbath is a day dedicated to living differently than the other six days of the week. 

Mark 2:27 NLT - 27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.

Genesis 2 NIV 1-3 - 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Exodus 20: 8-11 NIV - 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Sabbath is coming for you, whether as delight or discipline.

If you want to experience the life of Jesus, you have to adopt the lifestyle of Jesus.

Jesus was busy but he was not a man of hurry. He moved slowly enough through life that he was able to observe and be of help to those who were in need of prayer, a friend, a word of encouragement, healing, or even just ten minutes of his time. Jesus had many things he needed to get done, just like we do, but unlike many of us, some of those things include silence, solitude, and stillness.

Jesus wasn’t in too much of a hurry that his itinerary and schedule couldn’t be interrupted by a bleeding woman. Jesus’ spiritual disciplines allowed him to rid hurry from his life and fulfill his purpose in life.

Mark 5:21-29 NIV - 21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

The solution to an over-busy life is not more time. It’s to slow down and simplify our lives around what really matters.

The problem with hurry is the negative toll it has on our discipleship, relationships, and emotional health. Hurry is a heavy yoke. Jesus has offered us a heavenly alternative to hurry. He invites us to take his yoke upon ourselves, but he does not force it, and it is not a burden but gives us rest.

Matthew 11:28-29 NIV - 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Psalm 23 A psalm of David. - 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2     He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3     he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Jesus is offering rest for your soul for the rest of your life. Will you take it upon yourself?

If hurry sickness isn’t a medical diagnosis it probably should be. In this message we'll discuss how busy and hurrying and saying yes to everything is harming our health and blocking us from being disciples of Jesus. Hurry is not something that happens to us, but rather it is a lifestyle that we adopt.

We all have a little Martha in us.

Luke 10:38-42 NIV - 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Mark 8:36 ESV - 36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

Many of us are too busy to follow Jesus.

God is love (1 Jn. 4:8). Therefore, God gets to define what it looks, feels, tastes, smells, and sounds like.

God’s love sounds different. Use 1 Corinthians to discuss how God’s love sounds and doesn’t sound. It certainly doesn’t sound like a resounding gong or clanging cymbal. It sounds a lot more like patience, forgiveness, humility, and selflessness.

1 Corinthians 13 NIV - 1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails…
