In the midst of a world where power is achieved through force, Jesus is the perfect example of how vulnerability holds great power. Today we celebrate Jesus’ humble entry into the world, and remember that the humility that began His earthly life was also how He chose to bring hope to the world.

We don’t often think of Jesus as vulnerable. Yet, time and time again, all throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus acting in ways that would be textbook examples of vulnerability. As we look at Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, we see Jesus wanting His friends to be with him in His agony and to join Him in prayer. We also see Jesus wrestling vulnerability with His Father and ultimately surrendering to God’s will. It’s a very powerful and important picture for us.

It is astonishing to look at God as vulnerable. Isn’t it? It is not an adjective that we normally associate with God. Yet the life and ministry of Jesus reveals God in vulnerability. There might not be a more powerful example of God’s vulnerability than Jesus weeping in front of a crowd of people at the death of His friend, Lazarus. But it does teach us some powerful truths about how we should move through this world as we simply respond to Jesus.

There are many unique attributes of God. We love to talk about God’s omniscience and omnipotence. We love to talk about God’s holiness and love. Yet, we almost never talk about the unique vulnerability of God. In fact, the words vulnerability and God seem to have little to do with each other. Yet, the Bible teaches us something completely different. The incarnation of Jesus shows God’s great and profound vulnerability.

Sometimes the best views are from the peaks of mountain tops. But one thing we can easily observe is that nothing grows on the mountain tops. All of the real plant life happens deep in the valleys. The same is true for us spiritually. Jesus may reveal things to us in certain seasons, but He always desires that we would live out what we know.

It has been said that the Bible is the tale of two cities. Those two cities are Jerusalem and Babylon. It is a fascinating way to view the Bible. We are introduced to both cities in the Book of Genesis and our Bibles close with them in the Book of Revelation. If you know your Bible, you realize that you see these two cities throughout the unfolding story of Scripture. In this weekend’s message, we will see one of the most unique pictures in all of the Revelation, the woman who rides the beast. 

God is patient and compassionate. God is forgiving and kind. But in the His perfect nature, God is also just and holy. Oftentimes we struggle to hold all these perfect aspects of God’s character together in our hearts and minds. This will be part of our journey as we see the brutal bowl judgments being poured out. How do we reconcile God’s kindness and grace with his just punishment? Don’t miss this weekend’s message and find out.
