In Luke 14, Jesus goes to a party. And while he is there, Jesus does a little people watching. In verse 7 Luke writes, "he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table."
We all want a place at the table. We want a spot. We want a good spot, where we can be included in the conversation and be part of the important crowd.
This weekend at CrossWalk Church we're continuing our Investigating Jesus series as we walk through Luke's gospel; Jesus invites you to dinner.
As we go through the lesson, it might surprise you to know that some people don't want to come to dinner with Jesus. They make excuses. They are too busy. In reality, they don't want to spend time with him. They would rather be at a different table.
How about you? Do you want to be close to God. Do want to be included in the banquet?

June 22, 2024 Luke 13:18-35 - The Narrow Door (God's Kingdom is Inclusive & Exclusive) | 06.23.24 Weekend Message
"Lord, are only a few going to be saved?"
Someone asked Jesus this question as he was on a gospel teaching tour, making his way Jerusalem.
Instead of trying to appease the person or deflect the question, Jesus goes right to the heart of the matter. You could always count on Jesus for never beating around the bush. After all, this is one of the most important questions a person could ask. What is the fate of humankind?
Jesus' answer? "Make every effort to enter the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to."
This weekend at CrossWalk Church, Jesus shows that he is the narrow door. He teaches us what the kingdom of God is like and how we can enter it.
Jesus is both the most exclusive and inclusive way there is. Jesus means to both warn us and comfort us. And most importantly, he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

In this week's lesson, Jesus deals directly with the subject of untimely death.
Jesus addresses two incidents that happened in his day. One group of individuals was killed by the governor at a religious festival. Another group died in a tragic accident when a tower fell in Jerusalem.
Jesus doesn't answer the "Why?" question. Although he does make it clear that dying young is NOT a punishment from God.
Jesus directs us to the truth that life is short and precious, for all of us. And each day we need to live as if it could be our last. We need to be ready to meet God at any moment.

Jesus spent almost all of Luke chapters 11 and 12 warning against the dangers of greed.
Are you blind to greed in your life?
Maybe when you think of greed you think of the cartoon of Scrooge McDuck swimming in his safe full of gold, or a Wall Street executive making insane amounts of money.
But you don't need to be rich to be greedy.
At CrossWalk Church in Phoenix we continue our Investigating Jesus series as we walk through Luke's gospel. This weekend Jesus addresses the oft hidden sin of greed.
This is a subject most people don't want to touch because, when it comes to our money, we tend to get very sensitive. (which is actually an indicator of a greed problem.)
But Jesus deals with greed because it can compromise our relationship with him or even shipwreck our faith.

Jesus was pretty harsh on church people, especially the leaders.
They annoyed him for probably the same reasons they annoy you.
You know the type, right?!? You have the self-righteous people who think that they are better than everyone else.
Or maybe the "rules people." They are the ones that are in everyone else's business and are self-proclaimed experts on how everyone else should live.
And don't even get Jesus going on the hypocrites. They are the ones who don't practice what they preach. They talk a good game. But when it comes to living it, they leave much to be desired.
The common thread with all of these groups of people is that they are devoid of any love or compassion or mercy for people who are hurting.
This weekend at CrossWalk Church, as we continue our Investigating Jesus series as we walk through Luke's gospel, Jesus addresses arrogant, self-righteous church people.
Jesus says, “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” Luke 11:52, NIV
Jesus wants us to go to heaven and wants us to be part of his kingdom. But the church experts lost the "key to knowledge." And, as result, all that was left was a bunch of meaningless rules.
But Jesus is the key. Understanding him changes church from an insufferable rule keeping competition to an uplifting interaction with God.

Have you ever prayer for a sign from God?
This weekend at CrossWalk Church in Phoenix as we continue our Investigating Jesus series as we walk through Luke's gospel, some "less than sincere" individuals ask Jesus for a sign.
Jesus calls out the fickle people who ask for a sign. The problem was that no sign would ever be enough for them. They were like Pharaoh in Egypt at the time of Moses. God sent ten signs (that came as plagues) and Pharaoh stubbornly refused to acknowledge them.
Nonetheless, Jesus promised a remarkable sign that would take away any doubt that he is both a powerful God and that he loves and cares for us.

How is your prayer life?
Your answer to that question most likely depends on how you view prayer and if you think it "works".
There are times when the power of prayer is clear. Someone prays and things change! Then, there are times when a whole bunch of people are praying for a person and it seems like nothing changes.
If you struggle with prayer, you are not alone. The good news is that God wants to bless you with a rich prayer life that draws you closer to him.
At CrossWalk Church in Phoenix we continue our Investigating Jesus series as we walk through Luke's gospel. This weekend Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray by giving them what we know as The Lord's Prayer.
We will see how the Lord's Prayer is God's template for a meaningful, transformative and active prayer life.
Jesus shows us that we don't have to face obstacles on our own. God gives us a 24/7 communication line with him through prayer.

What do you do when a homeless person approaches your car at a stoplight?
Do you roll up your window as quickly as possible?
Do you keep looking straight ahead, refusing to make eye contact and maybe even bow your head and pray for a green light?
Do you look at the cup holder in your center console and try to find some loose change to help the person out a little bit?
Maybe you've done all three of these things at different times and don't always know if you're helping or hurting.
This weekend at CrossWalk Church, we will continue Investigating Jesus as we walk through Luke's gospel and witness Jesus addressing the topic of being a neighbor and helping those in need.
Jesus tells a story that includes a robbery, a man beaten have to death and religious leaders who refuse to help.
But the real twist comes when the person who seems least likely to help, shows surprising grace and mercy.
Digging deeper into this story will change the way that we see God and the way that we look at those in need.

If you were to google "stressful occupations", your search would reveals jobs like surgeon, firefighter, nurse and police officer.
What do all these jobs have in common? They deal with life and death issues every day.
So why does anyone want to perform these jobs?
Maybe the first answer would be "money", but not all of these jobs pay all that well.
Perhaps deep down individuals want to make a difference in the world and a significant impact on the lives of other people.
At CrossWalk Church in Phoenix we will continue Investigating Jesus as we walk through Luke's gospel. This weekend Jesus reminds us that sharing the gospel is a high stress occupation.
Why the stress? Jesus told his disciples that some would believe the message and some would reject the message. This means some people are headed to eternal life and others to eternal separation from God.
As we share Jesus, eternity is on the line!

The words of Jesus in Luke 9:23 are pretty bold. You could even call them an ultimatum.
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." Luke 9:23, NIV
Jesus is saying, "In order to say "Yes!" to me, you need to say "No!" to yourself." And it even goes deeper that that. There is a part of each of us that needs to die.
We need to put to death the sinful, selfish, self-centered pride that is buried deep in our hearts. It is no easy task.
At CrossWalk Church in Phoenix, we will continue Investigating Jesus as we walk through Luke's gospel. This weekend Jesus lays out the cost for following him. We need to carry a cross.
Jesus is no stranger to the cross. He carried his cross because of his relationship with us. He willingly carried a cross to give his life to restore our relationship with God.
And we carry a cross because of our relationship with him. We give our lives to him as we follow.
