The Pursuit Of The Good Servant - 1 Timothy 4:7-10

Worldly philosophies are surely inviting, that even Christians, at times, find themselves in pursuit of them. However, Paul convinced Timothy to pursue godliness instead (v. 7b), because it is a better and more worthwhile pursuit. He argued that the promise it holds both for the present and the life to come is sure (v. 8), and the completion of this pursuit is certain (v. 10).

The Importance Of Theology In The Work Of A Good Servant - 1 Timothy 4:1-6

The ever-decreasing value of theology in most churches puts them in a dire situation. Perceiving that heresies will grow from bad to worse, Paul exhorted Timothy, as one who has been trained in the Gospel, to expose the Ephesian heresies by bringing these teachings under the truths of the Gospel. Contrary to the thinking of most people that the Church does not need much theology, for Paul, a good servant of the Gospel, is equipped to battle every heresy when he is theologically astute.

Deacons who have served well, as was communicated in the sermon, are those who have a good and well-rounded testimony of their faith in the Gospel to the church and their community, holding its clear truths with an equally clear conscience.

“What qualification do you need if you just want to serve?” This is a question often said to point that one does not need much to serve. There is more danger in it though than the grain of truth that it might contain.

While deacons hold an office, they are basically servants. Yet when it comes to their faith and character, Paul basically held them to that same standard of faith and character of the Elders. He considered deacons who have a good and well-rounded testimony of their faith in the Gospel to the church and their community as deacons who have served well.

We Will Know That It Is The Lord - John 21:1-14

If writers have a writer’s block when they could not do what they are supposed to do - writing, Gospel workers could have those dark times too when they simply do not want to testify of Christ.

Though Jesus already appeared twice after His resurrection, the disciples of Jesus who were gripped with sadness that Jesus would no longer be with them physically, thought of doing another work instead of testifying of Christ. However, Jesus came to them in an unmistakably clear way and intimated with them, that they might be refreshed and be at work to testify that He truly is the Christ.

The Gospel-Exalting Qualifications For Eldership (Part 8) - 1 Timothy 3:1-7

Maturity can really be tricky. It is easy to say that a person is mature because he manifested other qualifications of an Elder. But unless this is proven true for a period of time and outside the faith community, it cannot be said to be a marker of biblical maturity.

Knowing full well the damage into the name of Christ and the credibility of the Church if an Elder’s testimony would be destroyed, Paul gave two more qualifications of an Elder (1 Timothy 3:6-7) where most unqualified ordained Elders may still have to prove themselves and by making sure, to keep them from being vulnerable to Satan’s destructive schemes. He wanted Timothy to make sure that he will only ordain aspiring Elders who have proven time-tested and community-attested maturity.

Learn with us and be persuaded that it cannot be said that one is ready for Eldership unless his testimony is proven by time and the community.

Members Not Strangers - Ephesians 2:11-22

One of the hindrances to unity is a failure to give equal rights and privileges to everyone. In the book of Ephesians, Paul is driving home the point that the Church should be united as she is the present masterpiece of God which points to the plan of cosmic and eschatological unity. In Ephesians 2:11-12, he labored to make these Gentile believers understand that despite how spiritually lost and hopeless they were then, God made them members of His household through the blood of His Son Jesus Christ to lay down the foundation of the unity of the Church.

The Great Grace Of God - Jonah 3:1-10

Jonah has been given a second chance to obey the Lord's command to call out the wickedness of Nineveh. Upon hearing the great message from God, the people believed, called out mightily to Him, and turned away from their evil ways. The great grace of God was displayed, "When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it." (Jonah 3:10).

Jonah 3:1-10 demonstrates the great grace of God exceedingly by reaching out to us through a message that would cause us to respond in repentance and to mightily call upon Him.

A Covenant Community Commended To The Grace Of God - Acts 14:21-28

Paul’s first missionary journey accompanied by Barnabas was about to conclude with an inspiring Gentile reception heading back to their sending church until persecution turned things around. So instead of going back safely home, they revisited their planted churches to ensure their proper care and maturity in the faith in the midst of suffering. And as they finally returned, “they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled” (Acts 14:26).

Acts 14:21-28 teaches us a lesson about being a covenant community that testifies of the grace of God being truly at work in us by caring deeply for the lives of each one in the Lord, as shaped by the cross.
