  • Erin Harkes - Episode 154
02 Oct 2012: Erin Harkes is an original singer/guitar/piano player from upstate New York.Erin began writing songs at the age of 19 and has since released four albums of original material.
The first album, 'Bar Napkins and Magic Markers' was recorded at St. Andrews college in North Carolina. The CD features nine tracks and was a learning experience for Erin, as she recorded the album entirely by herself.
Her second CD was recorded live at the Elbow Room in NYC on September 21, 2001 and contains four songs. The following year, she recorded her first studio project with her band, The Rebound, entitled 'Rough' and an 11-track live CD in 2005 called 'Special I Am' which featured nine original songs.
Erin currently resides in Albany, NY. In addition to her own band, she performed with another local band, Folding Sky, for the 2004 Colossal Contender Blues Competition at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. Out of three finalists, they received 60% of the votes to earn a position in the international finals in Memphis, TN in 2005. Don Wilcock of the Troy Record had this to say of Erins performance: 'standing firmly on two feet, this dirty blonde banshee belted out her music with no vibrato, no soft feminine wiles, just a blast-furnace breath of fire that singed the hair of everyone in the last aisle at the top of the museum steps watching her performance.'
Though blues has been known as her forte, her original material bounces from one genre to the next for an alternative/folk/rock mix. She has opened for such divergent national acts as David Allen Coe (country), Melissa Ferrick (folk), Fred Eaglesmith (Alternative) and the Fleshtones (Rock), each time well received. She even sat in with the Fleshtones for a song, and John Suvannavejh from the Metroland had this to say; 'Harkes was freed to let loose with her raspy, blues-inflected croon. Although it certainly doesnt hurt to have one of the finest garage bands in the land backing you, Harkes deep-hearted rendition was absolutely mesmerizing, and even gave Mr. Van Morrison a run for his money.'

  • reaLation - Episode 153
18 Sep 2012: reaLation was born from two separate ideas. First, the songs seem to focus on real world problems, issues and concerns. The band tries to shed light on subject areas that are either taboo, ignored in the past, or issues that have yet to come to the surface. Secondly, the band feels one of the most important facets of human existence is the ability to relate to one another, the environment, and society. The songs that have truly turned the band on the most are ones they can really related to. There have been songs the band have been able to relate to right away and others that have taken an experience or life circumstance to create the connection. It is from this that the term reaLation was created and the band feels truly reflects what they are trying to accomplish as artists.

  • Mike Grosshandler - Episode 152
12 Jun 2012: Over the years, Mike has kept busy writing, recording, and performing new original music, producing many recordings in his home studio. In the beginning, he used only a single microphone to put together some acoustic tracks. The original intent was to have some kind of demo for himself of each song hed written. After receiving some positive feedback, he decided to release these acoustic recordings. The first of these became his debut solo album, 'Scales' (2003). Mike released his second CD, 'Wrote Myself', in October of 2004, which received a positive writeup in the British magazine 'Acoustic'.
In early 2012, after over three years of work, Mike released 'Blue Skies Black', a more ambitious project to follow up his previous releases. Mike again produced and recorded most of the tracks himself, mostly in his home studio, performing nearly every instrument on the album. The album also features six different drummers, a live horn player, and guest vocals on a song by Phil Taylor (Future Leaders of the World, Machina).
Mike has been voted 'Best Local Solo Musician' and 'Best Local Producer' by readers of Metroland.
Mike began his musical endeavors with the Long Island based alternative/grunge rock band State of Nowhere. SON existed long enough to release one self-titled CD before splitting up in 1997, its members going on to various projects. Mike moved to Albany and joined up with the band pour.jayce, with whom he lent his guitar skills until 1999. That year, Mike and other former pour.jayce members Figaro and Bruce reformed as The Velmas. In 2011, Mike joined up with Matt Shufelt and Ricky Little and Steve Rajter to form Above The Flood.

In the bands time together, they have progressed from playing open mics in coffee shops, to playing at Capital Area Indie Fest at the famous 'Egg' in Albany. The band has shared the stage with seasoned musicians and opened up for accordion octets at farmers markets. Basically, the band loves to play anywhere and entertain our audiences (but mostly themselves) with their upbeat and nerdy shows.

  • Nightmare River Band - Episode 149

19 May 2012: Making music about 'love, loss, pain, drinking and healing,' although not necessarily in that order, The Nightmare River Band was named one of the Top 5 up and coming Alt-Folk bands in NYC by Deli Magazine in 2010. Crowds of revelers have been quick to join the party, clamoring to shout along the lyrics with drinks clutched in their hands. In between playing shows, downing pints and winning over critics, core members Matt Krahula (vocals, guitar, ukulele) and Seth Faulk (drums, vocals) managed to find time to write and record a follow up to their 2009 debut Call The Cops! The new album, Last Goodbye, offers up standouts such as 'Mary.' A demo of that song was nominated for an Independent Music Award for best Alt-Country song of 2010. The full version combines all of the ingredients of The Nightmare River Bands potent blend: foot-stomping rhythms, full arrangements, and a harmonious chorus that everyone can sing along to - even after consuming more than a few beers. The Nightmare River Band has drawn comparisons to alt/folk/country contemporaries such as Mumford and Sons and The Avett Brothers. While this sound is rapidly gaining popularity and bandwagon jumpers, The Nightmare River Band is continuing to do just what theyve done since their formation, taking their music on the road to bring the Nightmare to your town.

  • Hearing Aides - Episode 147

10 Apr 2012: The Hearing Aides are a hard rocking, noise mongering power trio from upstate New York. They like to play loud music thats also kind of pretty ... sometimes. Brian Patrik sings and plays raunchy Big Muff-fueled guitar. Mark Adamo beats the holy living hell out of his drum set. Rob Piccola abuses his bass like it just looked at him the wrong way. With their powers combined, the members of The Hearing Aides are assaulting the Capital Region one venue at a time, offering a crash course in ear-bleeding to all the wimpified, so-called 'rock' bands out there. Last year, the debut album 'Go Deaf With The Hearing Aides!', produced by the legendary Don Fury, introduced the world to this trios sonic belligerence - but thats just the tip of the iceberg. Meaner, leaner and armed with new material, The Hearing Aides are poised to unleash even more snarling riffs, pounding rhythms and hummable melodies on unsuspecting audiences all over.

  • Charmboy - Episode 145

27 Mar 2012: Three small town kids brought up on hard rock and psychedelic music in the 70s, Charmboys members long for rocks bad ol days. Unapologetic guitar rock without gimmick or pretense. Charmboys new CD offering 'Let It Feed' is a time capsule of unapologetic guitar rock, born of the true golden age of Rock and Roll. Guitarist Eric Halder penned and sings lead on eight of the nine tracks, with a vocal style that is part spoken-word, not unlike Jimi Hendrix or Phil Lynott. I suspect it is an intentional nod. In the tradition of rocking power trios, the rhythm section is tight, fueled by the rock steady beat of drummer Scott Smith, along with the soulful, flowing and heavy bass lines of baby monster Sarah Clark, who adds backing vocals as well. Riding shotgun with a banshee wail of a guitar sound is Halder, and at his hand, notes get bent, tones get distorted and volumes pushed.

  • Immune Friction - Episode 144

20 Mar 2012: Bennington, Vermont based band Immune Friction started off as a pseudonym for Manhattan-born singer/songwriter Christopher Dayton. Along with being a gifted writer, he honed his musical skills in college, graduating with a degree in music from Keene State. Chris focused mainly on guitar, but he also plays piano, drums, bass, and sings. He began playing open mics while in school and went on to play at many local venues and opening for several acts. He collaborated with many musicians, trying to achieve the perfect mix for his music until he met drummer/singer Justine Curry in 2010. Justine is a native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and has been singing since she was 4 years old. Drumming didnt come until later, although she cites watching her older sister learn the instrument growing up as a big influence. It turned out to be in her blood, as she would later find out that her great-grandfather was a jazz drummer. Chris and Justine started meeting to work on a few of Daytons songs and had instant musical chemistry, even laying down a recording the first day! He had long been looking for a female vocalist to join his band and her drumming style fit his songs perfectly. Along with then bassist Jeff Coulter, the group played a few gigs and recorded an album before Jeff moved away to study art. Instead of disbanding, or looking for a replacement, the two decided to move ahead as a duo and havent looked back.
