Isn’t it funny when a song follows you around? For me this week it’s been “One More Day” by Wilson Phillips. Should we cover it?? Yes? No? Hell no? Hell yes???
Today, a post-tour chat about life on the road, celebrating your wins (even when it’s scary) and the mysterious vibrations created by the live music experience.
Hope you’re feeling yourself this week. And if you did something BIG or SMALL that you’re super proud of, know that I am celebrating with you. : )

Modern Adult Kicks is out now, if you feel like dancing and/or feeling a whole range of emotions! We’ll see you in California in November, too. Can’t WAIT to get my hands on a Phillipe’s French Dip.
If this wasn’t enough Hayley for you (is it ever enough??), why not try this Hayley and Dr. Cain conversation from the Born too Late radio show? It was a JOY.
Modern Adult Kicks drops tomorrow! This is your reminder to do that scary thing!
Hello from Hamtown aka Hamtramck aka the border of Detroit aka the Weirdest Place I've ever Lived! Don’t believe me? Check out Hamtramck Disneyland, next on our to-do list!
You can almost see us down there, hauling trash out of what I’ve been referring to as our “plush gnome domicile.”
How are we doing, you ask? Well, we’ve been eating nothing but pierogis and sour cream courtesy of our favorite polish deli. Discovering delicious Yemeni recipes has been life changing, too. I mean, C’mon…this stuff is insane!
Apparently my hair color is all the rage in this majority Muslim community…(Orange is the new black in Bangladesh). Yep, I really fit in here!
We’ve been getting lots of cat calls and strange looks (more than normal, anyway) thanks to our dogs’ new Coyote Vests. Sure, they look punk rock, but they are truly are a lifesaver. Behold, their new outfits—not just a fashion statement. “It’s a lifestyle!”
Vinyl pre-orders for our new record starts Aug. 23 via Kitten Robot Records (NOT October 23 - no idea why my brain said that). Of course, the album drops everywhere 9/13/22 followed by a tour that takes us through the Midwest and a bit of California…Look for limited edition Icee cups at the merch table, maybe? (Please don’t sue us, Icee).
If one sign could exemplify how far we’ve flown the coop, it would be this one—posted up at a storefront near our house. (P.S. I went inside: Did not see any live birds, but the freezer section is a little mysterious).
The Hamtramck community library garden is my favorite thing ever. Because ALL libraries should have gardens with wicked cool street art!!! You will probably find me here a lot, regardless of the fact that the librarian is persnickety about whether I live in Detroit or Hamtramck. Don’t worry, I am working on her.
The Painted Lady, below, is an institution! Also pictured: Me posing with my girl Frida in Mexicantown. (YES, we finally had legit street-style tacos and it was glorious). After all, we all Californians at heart…
XOXO

Tom Petty knew that the waiting is the hardest part. Well, having waited several months to transform from sickly basement dwellers into shiny, new homebuyers, I can truly relate. But this is not a complainy audio gift. On the contrary! This is your reminder that let go of control! I hope that you can ease into the fact that whatever you are waiting for will come when it comes. And if it doesn’t come, that’s OK. Because I’m OK and you’re OK (insert peace sign here).
Over the past few weeks, we have run into roadblocks on roadblocks on roadblocks when it comes to securing our own little slice of Motor City real estate. This, I should underscore, is no fault of our real estate agent, Craig Brown. Go check out his alt country band—so fabulous! It’s more that Detroit is its own planet. Not unlike Berlin, this is a place still working to redeem itself after suffering complicated wounds and a rather intense mass exodus.
I could go into the most boring, granular detail on WHY everything is so stinking difficult in terms of this particular home-buying process, but is that really what you want? Nah. Instead, I will bestow upon you a “glamor shot” of me removing wallpaper on a 95-degree day. What you suspect is correct: Dr. Cain did most of the work that day. And just why are we removing wallpaper in a house we do not own? Don’t ask, don’t tell. Also pictured: The illusive “Wine O’Clock” time piece, a true collectible! If we ever do close on this damn house, we are totally keeping it.
One AMAZING thing about nesting in Detroit? Well, aside for the crazy good food—and the fact that I was able to see international drag sensation Juno Birch on a regular weeknight, like NBD, right?—is that there are tons of FREE antiques just sitting in the street all day everyday. So far, we’ve banked a full set of 1970s avocado green chairs, a nifty formica table and two super cute Mid Century side tables. I almost think we need our own HGTV channel about it. We could call it “Free to Fabulous.” Not to brag, but we are in curbside heaven, ya’ll.
In other news…Next week, we will be filming a new music video at the most incredible vintage store in Detroit, FLAMINGO VINTAGE! Big thanks to our new pal and store owner Nikki, who is not only a vintage expert, but a cool and nice new friend.
Some other tidbits for you:
How to eat like Anthony Bordain in Detroit
Canadian band Wine Lips crossed our paths recently and they were melt-your-face-awesome. Go check them out!
Ottessa Moshfegh is one of my favorite authors at the moment and she has a new book out, which I cannot wait to read. It’s set in the Middle Ages and, if it is anything like her other books, it will be darkly funny, sarcastic, kinda gross and totally inspired.
We watched a movie. Who even am I? I cried the entire way through Everything Everywhere All At Once, and then texted everyone I know to tell them it was the best moved I’d ever seen. I still maintain is the most personally transformative film I have ever seen, second only to when I skipped school to watch Waking Life as a teenager. It is like the Matrix + every emotion you’ve ever had but never told anyone about. Dr. Cain thought it was pretty good.
Yay for care packages with pockets! Heidi over at Blue Platypus (a small clothing indie label I have been wearing nonstop for the past few years) recently came out with a really cute jumpsuit with lots of groovy mushrooms all over it. She was kind enough to send me one and it is my new favorite “all terrain” outfit. Soooooo many pockets (yes, I posted on social media bout this, because I am a very fancy model and an influencer). Briefly, let me reiterate: POCKETS. In case you didn't know, pockets (and lack of them) are a huge feminist issue. Seriously. GO LOOK IT UP.)
That’s all for now. Take good cafe of yourselves, keep your eye out for fabulous street finds and see you next week!

They say love the one you’re with. Well, it’s true with pizza, too! That said, it is VERY EASY to love our new local pizza joint, Buddy’s! If you’re interested in our favorite new pizza obsession, ghost ships, zoot suits and the possibility of an all Peanut-themed coloring book, listen on!
Which way to the beach?? Pictured below: A very confused Californian standing at the edge of Lake Heron. I think it finally clicked why these lakes are considered “Great.”
We just can’t make this stuff up! The adventure continues, from the van to the basement to complete insanity and back to health again! Pretty sure we earned this coney dog.
We went to a lot of fun places on tour, but I have to give a shout to Westside Bowl , the coolest punk rock bowling alley/venue in Youngstown, OH!

Send your BFF food on Uber Eats! This was one of the best things to brighten my Covid-19 birthday. Thank you for the nice voice messages, zoom hangs and love. It really got me feeling grateful to be “35 and still alive!”
Shout out to my friend Jenn, who sent me quite possibly the MOST millennial-of-the-moment gift… (YES it’s an eyeshadow palette that looks exactly like a Lisa Frank unicornTrapper Keeper!) If that doesn’t fix everything, I don’t know what will!

P.S. I recently joined Homework Club, Beth Pickens’ awesome artist collective aimed at keeping folks accountable to their creative goals. June is all about staying off social media and/or re-evaluating your boundaries around it…join me for a cleanse that is a long time coming! OK, I might have a to post a few things about the band. But, in general, I am looking forward to a vibrant and exciting June spent outside, living and breathing in the world. Quarantine + basement dwelling does weird things to a person. More fresh air and adventures, please!
Good evening and a side of ranch to you! We have finally made it to Detroit! More accurately, a cozy basement in Garden City! The Chihuahuas are cold! I have absolutely no concept of United States geography. What’s new, right? Anyways, ENJOY…

Crushers Show dates! TOUR STARTS THIS THURSDAY 4-21 with Suzi Moon and Ravagers at The Sanctuary Detroit. WILD!
Thanks to Amado and Dougie of Norcos y Horchata and Devious Ones for the practice space/putting us up in this fine, wood-paneled basement!
Also, forgot to mention in this episode a few important foods we tried along the way…
#1 Toasted Ravioli (apparently a Saint Louis thing). It was filled with meat, fried, then served with meat sauce. I enjoyed it, actually!
#2 “Saint Louis Style Pizza,” which we had NO IDEA was a thing. NOTE: St. Louis-style pizza often includes a white processed cheese known as “Provel.” Provel is a trademark for a combination of three cheeses (provolone, Swiss, and white cheddar) used instead of (or, rarely, in addition to) the mozzarella or provolone common to other styles of pizza.

Vroom vroom! Today, I get into some nitty gritty details of how the Crushers do VAN LIFE! We’re preparing for our cross country move (and subsequent Midwest tour), so traveling in style is a must! I do hope these road tripping tips are useful to you—or at the very least—funny. : ) If we can’t laugh at the ridiculousness of squishing our lives into a metal box, what can we laugh at?
