Forget the red hair, seashell bras and Disney version.

The older stories of mermaids are much stranger. In this episode of Walking in the Shadows, I head into mermaid and merpeople traditions from Australia, the wider Pacific and beyond, looking at the beings described in Indigenous stories, ancient folklore and reported encounters. 

Some are protectors. Some are warnings. Some lure people into the water. Others are described as frightening, powerful and very definitely not something you would want to meet while swimming alone at night. Then things get even weirder. Why do similar stories appear in cultures separated by enormous distances? Are we looking at mythology shaped by humanity’s relationship with water, misidentified animals, an undiscovered species... or something else entirely?

I also get into sirens, selkies, strange sightings, water spirits and my slightly unhinged theory about whether the beings we call “mermaids” might be nothing like the creatures we imagine them to be. I am not saying I have the answer.

I am saying I might be staying out of the deep water for a while.
