  • Sonification: A tool to break down barriers to participation in studying the universe? Visualization Scientist, Kimberly Arcand, says Yes.

In this episode, we explore the fascinating world of sonification, the process of translating data into sound. Our inspiration is Dr. Kimberly Arcand, a visualization scientist and science communicator who uses sonification to study the universe. In a recent episode on CivicSciTV's special series titled 'Sounds of Science, Arcand's sonification of the energetic center of our galaxy, the Sagittarius A supermassive black hole is featured.

    Key Points:

    • Sonification isn't just assigning any sound to any data point. Arcand explains how soundscapes are carefully designed to reflect the specific characteristics of the data being used.
    • This episode focuses on the data from the Sagittarius a black hole which lies at the center of the Milky Way galaxy.
    • Arcand uses data from various telescopes, including Spitzer, Hubble, and Chandra, each picking up on different aspects of this energetic region.
    • She translates this data into a rich soundscape where the sounds of different instruments represent various energy levels. For example, a piano might represent low energy data, while a violin signifies medium energy, and a glockenspiel represents high energy.
    • The interplay between these sounds from different telescopes creates a complex soundscape, allowing us to experience the data in a completely new way and gain a deeper appreciation for the intricate dance of energy happening at the galactic center.

      • QOTD - Scholarship from outreach: Water from a stone... or a sponge? Peter Vollbrecht explains.

On CivicSciTV's Questions of the Day (QOTD) show, Peter Vollbrecht shares insights from a civic science project called Brain Explorers which he developed with his colleagues.

        Actionable Insights
Outreach as Scholarship: Vollbrecht emphasizes treating outreach as a scholarly activity that not only advances understanding of effective science engagement but also supports career growth.
Effective Targeting: Data from the program show that targeted outreach, especially school visits, more effectively reaches diverse and underserved groups compared to general community events.
Continuous Assessment: Ongoing evaluation of outreach efforts is crucial for refining and enhancing their impact, ensuring that activities meet their intended educational goals.
Resource Development: Developing and sharing lesson plan templates can facilitate broader implementation of effective science lessons, reducing the preparation burden for educators.
Benefits for Participants: Vollbrecht notes the positive impact on medical students involved in the program, including improved communication skills and a heightened interest in science communication.

      • Commercial - Scientists: Want to make your science more accessible? Check out Galactic Polymath’s approach.

Galactic Polymath is an open-access education studio that helps scientists, nonprofits, and sustainable companies connect their work to K-12 classrooms (grades 5 and up).

We are scientists, teachers, artists, and filmmakers who love working with STEM experts to craft immersive, mind-opening learning experiences for students. We want students to play with data, practice inquiry and critical thinking, and flex their artistic creativity as they dive into real-world and data-centered activities.
Importantly, all our lessons are free for teachers anywhere and can be remixed and used under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NA license!
In addition to presentations, worksheets, and activities, we craft original videos and web apps to support learning. We also align to common standards in Science, Math, ELA, and Social Studies, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to make it easier to collaborate across subjects and help students connect learning beyond a single subject (interdisciplinary learning, i.e. STEAM, STEMM, STREAM).
