Eddie is heading out for dinner with his pal Lieutenant Hadley when he runs into an old friend. Or, rather, his old friend runs into him. He's in a state of shock and unable to speak. He's also holding a vase. What happened to him - and why is he holding a vase? The solution surprised even him.

Lord Ashford and his valet, Emil Whitlock, are traveling via train to New Mexico. On the way they meet several unusual characters. When one turns up dead after the train has been stopped in the middle of nowhere, and the crew has disappeared, the boys from England spring into action.

Several of the CFMT favorite detectives - Will Ruby, Eddie James and Susie Beck, Lord Ashford - along with Will's fiancé Roberta and Monty's valet, Emil Whitlock, have traveled to New York City for the annual Association of Private Detectives convention. Will and Roberta have invited their two favorite cabbies, Agnes and Doris, to join them at the convention for what they consider the silliest part - the made-up crime. When a real crime is committed, the gang gets a chance to show just how brilliant they really are.

As Eddie and Susie, with the help of Lieutenant Hadley, set up their new office, Eddie takes a phone call from a potential client who needs to see them right away. Before Eddie can tell them their new address the caller hangs up. That turns out to be a good thing. Instead of a client Eddie and Susie find a corpse, one who had been made to look as if he was killed by Eddie. Why? And who was behind it? The answer is surprising - and deadly.

Unfortunately, the owner of that restaurant is dying to die - right in front of Eddie and Susie. How? She was stabbed with a kitchen knife then fell off the roof of a building. The next day, the owner of the knife - who is also the hottest new chef in that hottest new restaurant - wants to hire the duo to find her knife, which she claims was stolen. Had it been stolen, or was that just a story? If it's a story, who else could have done it - and why? It's up to Eddie, Susie, their pal Lieutenant Hadley and his new assistant to figure it all out .
