  • WTComics Presents: THE BIG HUNT!

This is it, it’s the return of one of our most poplar shows ever, THE BIG HUNT!
It’s a simple concept, with amazing results. Brett, Keith, Mo and defending champ Chris take twenty dollars and go shopping at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, trying to find the craziest, most amazing things they can for that budget price. And you won’t believe what they come across on this scavenger hunt type event.
As an added bonus, this year’s contest is judged by our good buddy, Batman ’66 artist Scott Kowalchuk, (click to see Scott’s excellent online strip Lucha Liberty) as well as his good friend Crystal.
This is likely the funniest comic book related show you’ll hear in 2019, if not ever. And make sure to check the gallery below to see all the wild stuff that was bought. We promise you won’t believe some of it.
Can anyone knock Chris off during the Big Hunt? Listen to find out if he successfully defends last year’s title from the Creating Commerce showdown.

  • WTMusic: Helix Interview and Concert Review

Helix, the Godfathers of Canadian Heavy Metal, recently played a fantastic concert with another storied band i t Prism. But before the show Brett & Mo headed up to lead singer Brian Vollmer‘s hotel room for an exclusive podcast interview.
Brian tells us all about the new Helix album Old School, and why he thinks it’s so good. The album is a collection of unreleased tracks Brian has found as he’s getting ready to move Planet Helix to a new location.
This leads to a lot of talk of the cool things Brian has collected over the years. He also tells us about all the amazing people his wife Lynda has met over the years. Her story is truly fascinating.
Also, Brian tells us about his relationship with Gene Simmons. And he gives us a scoop on who he toured with years ago he actually thought was truly a dick. Brian also talks about how CRTC rules about radio stations having to play Canadian content actually keeps new music from being heard. And there’s also a great chat about how doing many projects pays off eventually, but how patience can be the key.
After the interview we got a chance to watch the band perform, as they supported Prism on this night. Helix proved why they continue to be a top flight live act. The band has a great catalog of songs, and are a tight, professional group. This was a night when as many in the audience were Prism fans as Helix fans, and they skew towards a slightly different audience. But that hardly matters. When you see Helix live, they will earn your respect.
Prism was also a fun part of the show. It’s hard to believe Al Harlow assumed lead vocal, as well as lead guitar, duties so late into Prism’s timeline. He has a remarkable voice that’s eerily similar to original singer Ron Tabak.
On this night a charming and relaxed Harlow led his talented veteran band to a crowd pleasing, and surprisingly interactive, performance. They certainly earned the White Hat honor bestowed upon them by the city on this night.
The end of the evening came with an extra special surprise. First, former Trooper drummer, Calgary’s own Frankie Baker make a surprise appearance on skins. Then the legend Brian Vollmer returned to share the stage with Al Harlow and the rest of the band.
Seeing two giants of Canadian music onstage was a special moment. And the mix of Helix and Prism coming together to perform “Take Me to the Kaptin” was magical. It capped, or should I say kapped, off a tremendous night.

  • WTComics Presents: The Indomitable Dave Sim Part 2

Part 1 with Dave Sim available here.
The We Talk Comics podcast is back for round 2 of our explosive interview with the legendary Canadian cartoonist Dave Sim.
On this episode we get all of Dave Sim’s thoughts on what happened between him and Bone creator Jeff Smith. Plus, the fallout that occurred. Dave gives his perspective on the incident. This includes how he still doesn’t understand what he said that offended Jeff Smith’s wife Vijaya Iyer. Dave also goes into why he believes that he was treated unfairly by the comic book industry afterwards. It’s a frank discussion from the point of view of the Cerebus the Aardvark creator.
This leads into further philosophical discussions on the willingness, or lack there of, of people to freely exchange thoughts and opinions. Dave Sim, of course, has plenty of thoughts on this topic.
Also, Dave explains some of his more controversial opinions on feminism and there effect on society. These are not widely held beliefs by many, but we certainly respect Dave Sim’s right to freely speak them.
And Dave also tells us a few other things, like why he doesn’t trust Amazon and Comixology. Also, why comic book creators still aren’t given the rights they should be.
This is another fascinating listen, and we encourage your feedback in the comments section. We also want to thank Dave Sim for his generous time given, and hope you all enjoy the show. We promise it’s a wild ride.

  • WTMusic Interview: Jacob Binzer on A Prayer For The Loud
And the D-A-D. find their 9 shells
    Are great for border raids
The We Talk Music podcast returns to the air chatting with Jacob Binzer, the guitarist from one of our all time favorite bands, D-A-D, to talk the new album A Prayer For The Loud.
There’s a bunch of great stuff here, like Jacob’s theory on how D-A-D was too Danish to break into the North American market. He also tells us how he and his band-mates write songs and how they began putting pen to paper for this album in 2015. Plus, if he knew his brother and lead singer Jesper Binzer was working on his solo album Dying Is Easy (Rock’N’Roll Is Hard), and how he felt about it. Plus, how they got the awesome album title, what does the future hold and will it be another 8 years before their next album, the great official D-A-D website, and how Jacob feels to be part of a Danish musical institution.
We promise this is a great one, check it out!
