For decades male Jehovah’s Witnesses were hauled into the back room, counselled, ridiculed, and denied privileges within the congregations and the organization simply because of a bit of stubble, a goatee, or growing a full beard. It is rare to see one of Jehovah’s Witnesses sporting a beard, and it is almost unheard of in English-speaking countries for a bearded brother to hold a position of responsibility.

There are many ways to give back to your community, such as volunteering at a local shelter, donating to a food bank, or simply checking in on a neighbour who may be struggling. And in our local communities, we see the muslims, hindus, and various church organizations involved in charitable work without prejudice. Many of us who were once part of the Jehovah's Witness community know the extent of the organization's involvement in charitable activities. Do they engage in benevolent work, or is their focus primarily on other priorities?

Propaganda. We've seen it at play with Israel’s war on Gaza. We have witnessed the battle to spread misinformation and those who want to spread the truth. We have witnessed how money plays a significant role in trying to control the narrative. We have seen people suffer consequences for speaking out against atrocities and for standing with victims and the oppressed. And the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses are masters of propaganda and trying to cover up the truth.

Religion and cults have very often been at the forefront of subjection and repression of women. Jehovah's Witnesses exerts a great deal of control over its members. Women in particular suffer from psychological stresses in high-control groups where patriarchal attitudes limit their personal power and freedom. This episode looks at these issues which often lead to physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

The issue that the majority of former cult members will agree on is that there is no easy way to exit from a cult. For some, it is not that difficult to leave. They are just less susceptible to mind control techniques. Some maintain that sense of self to make an informed decision to leave. There are many ex-cultists who say they spent years working up the nerve to get out. It really does take a tremendous amount of courage to leave. This episode explores the different ways in which members leave and the consequences that former members have to contend with.
