NPC members Shannon Fisher and Lisa Matthews discuss communications strategies for nonprofit organizations in this episode of Update-1. As vice president at Hager Sharp, a public relations firm representing mostly nonprofit clients, Matthews has a unique and well-rounded perspective on the topic. Prior to joining Hager Sharp, she was on the receiving end of nonprofit communications as a planning editor and assignment manager for The Associated Press. The two discuss the manner in which nonprofit news coverage differs from that of for-profit enterprises and offer some helpful hints for nonprofit organizations seeking to improve their communications strategy.

Shannon welcomes Candy J. Cooper and Marc Aronson to discuss their book, Poisoned Water: How the Citizens of Flint, Michigan, Fought for Their Lives and Warned the Nation. In 2014, as part of a plan to save money, government officials decided to switch Flint, Michigan's water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River. Within months, many residents broke out in rashes. Soon, children stopped growing. Some people were hospitalized with mysterious illnesses; others died. Citizens of Flint protested that the water was dangerous. Despite what seemed so apparent from the murky, foul-smelling liquid pouring from the city’s faucets, officials refused to listen. The residents later discovered the water had been poisoning thousands of people.
