Who better to discuss how political conventions have changed over the years than former Press Club President Jonathan Salant, who was in Philadelphia when Update-1 caught up with him at a very noisy Democratic National Convention. Shannon Fisher talked with Salant about the 18 conventions he has covered, beginning with the DNC in 1984 when New York Governor Mario Cuomo became a national political figure with his convention keynote address in which he spoke of "A Tale of Two Cities." Salant also discussed how video and social media, particularly Facebook and Twitter, have added to the responsibilities of reporters, and the differences between the Republican and Democratic conventions.

Nonprofit newsrooms provide necessary services to communities across the country, and they are the focus of this edition of Update-1. NewsMatch Project Director Jason Alcorn talks to NPC Broadcast/Podcast Committee member Shannon Fisher about the role of nonprofit news and the struggle independent news organizations have funding local watchdog journalism.
NewsMatch is an annual gift matching campaign started by the Knight Foundation, an organization with a mission of informing communities to keep them engaged as a way of maintaining a healthy democracy. Four out of five nonprofit newsrooms provide investigative and explanatory journalism. They frequently replace the reporting of for-profit news organizations that have downsized due to dwindling advertising revenues.

Shannon welcomes journalist Samantha Allen to discuss her book, Real Queer America: LGBT Stories from Red States. Allen takes us on a cross-country road trip with frequent stops at hubs of queer life across America's heartland, in areas known (or assumed) to be unfriendly to the LGBT community. She highlights cultural shifts for the LGBTQ+ community in unexpected places, as well as strides yet to be made. It's a very interesting look at life for this community away from well-known, thriving LGBT areas in coastal cities.

Shannon's guest this week, Julia Torres Barden, an award-winning journalist, gubernatorial appointee, and PTSD survivor. She endured a violent New York City childhood as a Puerto Rican girl from the South Bronx, which she chronicles in her book, “NEWYORICANGIRL…Surviving my Spanglish Life.” This novel/memoir is a gritty tale of trauma and painful cultural assimilation while pursuing the American dream. After navigating a traumatic childhood that included rape, her mother's conflicted life as the mistress of a powerful CEO, alcoholic parents, and forced adoption, Julia found herself trapped in New York City on 9/11.
"In 2013, I pushed my luck and I lived. I stared down my deepest fears and didn’t back down. I shared my vulnerability with strangers and they embraced me. I took so many risks that I exhausted myself to the brink of disaster. I looked the boogeyman straight in the eye and he blinked first; leaving me victorious and free," said Julia about her memoir.

Today, Shannon speaks with Gerry and Janet Souter about their book, Selling Americans on America - Journey into a Troubled Nation. The book is a historical account of a little-known chapter in American history: The Freedom Train. America was in a crippled state following World War II, and the Freedom Train toured the country, displaying 130 original documents and irreplaceable objects - from the National Archives, Library of Congress and private collections - that helped build our nation, establish and defend our Freedom values, patriotism and unity. The train was guarded by United States Marines and helped to unite Americans behind a renewed mission of civic engagement.

This episode of The Authentic Woman is dedicated to the memory of Esther Windmueller, who gave so much of her time and energy in her final years to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Ovarian Cancer is difficult to detect and, therefore, has a high mortality rate because it is often not discovered until it has reached a late stage. 22,000 women receive this diagnosis every year – and 14,000 women die of it annually.
Shannon speaks with Esther Windmueller, an ovarian cancer survivor who founded the nonprofit organization Cancer Dancer. Esther's organization helps women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer understand the disease, learn all of their options and become aware of all of the newest treatments available - as well as joining these women together in a supportive community so they can connect with others who truly understand their journey.
We discuss the warning signs of ovarian cancer so our listeners can be informed and recognize a potential problem as early as possible. Through awareness lives can be saved. “The most rewarding part of working with CancerDancer is the feedback from those who say we have really, really helped them through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Hearing this keeps us going.” ~ Esther Windmueller
