Do prepare thoroughly
Don't start negotiating immediately; don't be too gullible
Don't believe all the flattery
Make sure you have leverage in your negotiation
Make small steps
There is no substitute for living in another country; it's important to spend time in that country
You can't jump over your own shadow
Some Americans are smart; we, as Americans, can assume the best in others unless otherwise proven.
