In 1958, Joe Coulombe took over a small chain of convenience stores around the LA area. These were called Pronto Markets. The whole idea was fast. Pronto – quick, right? And they were convenience stores, before we really even know what convenience stores were. The kind of place where you could get anything from, say, a pack of gum to some pantyhose.

After 10 years of running Pronto Markets, the convenience store formula just didn’t continue to make sense. So, Joe, the classic entrepreneur, took note that the demographics were changing in the United States because of the G.I. Bill of Rights, a large experiment in mass higher education, and identified an opportunity to deliver… something different.

The first Trader Joe’s store opened in 1967 in Pasadena, California. (That store is still there. It's still operating. It still has the same parking lot.) The store had a nautical theme and it was run by people who were described as “traders on the high seas.” At the time, Joe had been reading a book called "White Shadows in the South Seas," and he’d been to the Disneyland Jungle Trip ride, and it all just…coalesced. To this day, Trader Joe’s Crew Members consider themselves “traders on the culinary seas” and are known for their bright, tropical-patterned shirts and for generally being nice, helpful, and well informed.

And then in 1972, Joe introduced a total game changer for Trader Joe's... Granola. Not just any granola, though. This was the first private label Trader Joe's product. After granola, we never looked back.

Focusing on private label (products with “Trader Joe’s” name on them) simplified a lot of things, and removed a lot of costs – no more slotting fees, marketing fees, middlemen fees… We passed along those savings to our customers (still do), because the value of Value is invaluable. And to us, “Value” means offering the best quality products for the best, everyday prices.

We understood then, as we do today, that maintaining our everyday focus on Value is vital, which is why we don’t have sales, loyalty programs, membership fees, or any other gimmicks. Instead, here is what we do:

We buy direct from suppliers whenever possible, we bargain hard to get the best price, and then pass the savings on to you.

If an item doesn’t pull its weight in our stores, it goes away to gangway for something else.

We buy in volume and contract early to get the best prices.

Most grocers charge their suppliers fees for putting an item on the shelf. This results in higher prices... so we don’t do it.

We keep our costs low—because every penny we save is a penny you save.

So, where were we…?

In 1988, when Joe retired, Trader Joe's had 19 stores. John Shields took over as CEO, and saw the opportunity to transfer this grocery store concept across geographical boundaries, starting with entry into Northern California. Then came Arizona, followed by the Pacific Northwest, and… by 1996 we had opened our doors on the East Coast. Lovers Point Park is located at the foot of 17th Street, and is a landscaped community park of 4.4 acres. It is used for picnicking, fishing, swimming, water sports, and surfing. Lovers Point's amenities include a large lawn area, a beach volleyball court, a children's swimming pool, sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, a concrete pier structure, a restaurant, and a snack bar. It is popular for weddings, and is home of the annual Feast of Lanterns pageant and fireworks celebration.

According to local legend, this park was originally called "Lovers of Jesus Point," back in the era when Pacific Grove was a Methodist retreat camp. Since the late 1800s, the beach at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove has been a popular spot for boating and swimming, and over recent decades surfers have joined the mix. Lovers Point Park has above all become Pacific Grove's best-loved spot for picnics, plein air painting, and scenic photography. Because of its unique east-facing location, it is also one of the only spots on the West Coast where you can watch the sun rise over the water.

For over 100 years, Lovers Point Beach has been Pacific Grove's most popular spot for shoreline recreation. Surfers love its reliable waves, while kayakers find it a perfect launching spot from which to get out on Monterey Bay and view the coastline and native wildlife. Scuba divers frequent the kelp forests here to get a close-up view of its marine denizens. Landlubbers can compete on the beach volleyball court. Lovers Point Beach is also the starting point for the infamous "Kelp Crawl" portion of the Triathlon at Pacific Grove.

Locals can always be found lounging on the grass at Pacific Grove's well-groomed 4.4-acre Lovers Point Park. Many visitors climb the rocks at the point for which it is named in order to get a spectacular view of Monterey Bay. Forgot to pack your picnic? You can buy snacks at the on-site snack bar. Be sure to stop by at the end of July to experience Pacific Grove's annual tradition, the Feast of Lanterns.

From Monterey, take Lighthouse Avenue northwest. It will become Central Avenue. Take a right on Grand Avenue. When it meets Ocean View Boulevard, look for parking.

From Highway 101, follow Route 68 west. It will become Forest Avenue in Pacific Grove. Stay on Forest Avenue until it ends at Ocean View Boulevard and look for parking.

In this episode of Culture Stroke, Host Jason Matthews explores the assumptions of objective reality and facts.

Jason Matthews says he has done a lot of research, contemplation and meditation on this subject.

He claims there are no facts and there is no objective reality. He says they are complete, blind assumptions.

Matthews says science is full of assumptions and is a belief system, just like religion. No one has ever proven facts exist. So science is a house of cards. Scientists are no robots in white, sanitized jackets. They are biased, indoctrinated, corrupt people, just like everyone in society. They are not special or exempt.

Matthews says science confused the map for the territory. For example when you read something on the internet or see something on TV you are taking it on blind faith because you have no direct experience of it.

Matthews says scientists are biased for many reasons. Examples are upbringing, the school system, family issues and problems, corruption, and much more. He says just humans being involved in analyzing anything means there will be subjectivity involved.

Jason Matthews says even direct experience is not reliable because eye witness testimony is biased.

In this episode of Culture Stroke, Host Jason Matthews comments on Naked Eyes Promises, Promises video and song.

Jason Matthews talks about how the song and video came out in 1983. He says he was in the 6th grade at the time. He says the video was not on heavy MTV rotation like Always Something There to Remind You was. He says the song hit number 11 of the pop charts.

Matthews says he plays guitar and really appreciates the musical complexity and arrangement on the song. He says the bass is kicking, the guitar is funky, and the synthesizer is amazing. Matthews refers to the one key on the synthesizer being held down towards the end of the song.

Matthews states he really remember the image of the lady standing on the pool board and falling off. He also says the video has low production quality and looks cheaper to make than other videos by the band.
