Some topics on this subject include how Turner was basically a rock star who Turner experimented with bold colors, dramatic lighting, and increasingly abstract techniques that challenged traditional painting. Turner lived an interesting life, and was about as rock star as a painter could be.

Episode 114: Just a Meat Sack Walking Around

Neal and LT are back together this week! LT has a new house, a garage that has changed her life, and a fireplace that apparently has never had a fire in it. Santa couldn’t get in even if he wanted to. Merry Christmas indeed.

This week Neal takes inspiration from STRANDED to revisit a childhood favorite, Hatchet, and the remarkable life of its author, Gary Paulsen. From a difficult childhood to racing sled dogs in the Iditarod, Paulsen turned his own experiences into stories about survival, self-reliance, and finding your way through situations you never asked to be in. Neal also shares how he would never last in the wilderness and the sweet gesture he made to his grammar school after meeting his favorite childhood author.

Then LT takes BLACK and GIGANTIC and introduces us to sculptor Richard Serra, whose enormous steel works make you think about space, your surroundings, and your own existence whether it ruins your daily commute or not. From towering sculptures in museums to a controversial wall that made office workers take the long way around, LT explores what happens when public art gets a little too public.

Episode 113: A Cacophony of Deep Questions

Neal is riding solo this week, and not only is he riding solo, the first segment is literally riding, in his new car, recording on a highway. Talk about dedication.

This week Neal, like LT, takes inspiration from LIST and also MEMORY to give us a list of 5 films worth checking out that deal with memory and all its themes. This episode explores memory not as a perfect record of the past, but as something we constantly reshape, reinterpret, distort, preserve, and sometimes desperately try to escape. Through these films, we look at how memory creates our sense of identity, love, grief, legacy, and even history itself. Some films included are Rashomon, Memento, and The Mirror... you'll have to listen for the others.

In this week's episode LT shares her enthusiasm for studying ASL and Deaf Culture and takes the word LIST to heart for her solo outing to talk about five influential women artists: Rachel Ruysch, Louise Bourgeois, Betye Saar, Faith Ringgold, and Julie Mehretu. LT connects all of them and their work through some themes like observation, identity, feminism, racial justice, storytelling, and the power of artists to redefine the materials and subjects that art history has traditionally undervalued.

Episode 111: A Ghoul at the Best Western

LT and Neal are back with a vengeance and LT gets triggered by two words that have haunted her for years... A Capella. But enough about the dulcet tones of beat boxing and harmonies.

Neal starts off today's episode taking 1100 and turning it into November 2000 to talk about one of the highest grossing movies of Y2K, How The Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey as everyone's favorite antagonist with a heart two sizes too small. Neal tells behind-the-scenes anecdotes, references the original book and cartoon, and previews some news behind the potential new franchise.

Then, LT invites listeners to learn about the extraordinary Edmonia Lewis, an American sculptor who was prolific during the Civil War and created unforgettable works of art when the world wasn't kind to her. Works include busts of famous American Generals (later featured in Hollywood being played by Ferris Bueller of all people) as well as work in Italy and Europe that would make her work timeless.

Episode 108: Considered Sexy For a Brief Period of Time

Neal and Shady kick off part two of their tit-for-tat with Neal going all-in on the number 69 for his discussion. Instead of one film, or one artist, Neal takes a request from a patron to give a list of the essential films you need to see to understand film in 1969.

Some of the films covered are independent films, hybrid narrative/documentary, crime films, an X-rated film, and a dark psychological Czechoslovak horror/thriller that Shady is honored Neal thought of him when recommended. The pair discuss modern films that perhaps take inspiration from some of these films, and Neal explains trivia, tidbits, and goes over the Hollywood industry and how it was changing during this pivotal period all while shoehorning in an embarrassing story from his musical theatre days. We hope you enjoy that.
