  • Dark Tourism & What Happens to the Dead on a Cruise Ship?

As the days get shorter, the evenings colder, many begin to plan their mid-winter escapes. They reserve a chaise lounge in a tropical locale, a spot to soak up sunshine and relax before spring warms the air.

Others search for something besides a tan or surf lesson when they travel, maybe seeking out sites where tragedies have occurred to better understand some of what National Geographic calls "humanity’s darkest chapters."

It's called dark tourism, and if the pre-Halloween energies have you seeking out the strange and curious and tragic and macabre, listen close. Your next vacay destination awaits.

    Let's get into it.

The definition of dark tourism from National Geographic is–visiting sites associated with death, tragedy, or the macabre–draws millions of travelers seeking historical education, remembrance, and a deeper understanding of humanity's darkest chapters.

The top dark tourism destinations across the globe span centuries of history and can be categorized by types. These include: Holocaust & Genocidal Remembrance. These include Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp memorial site in Poland where around 1.1 million people were murdered during World War II and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Cambodia, which preserves the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime which killed somewhere around two million people in the 1970s. Kigali Genocide Memoria in Rwanda is the final resting place for over a quarter of a million victims of the1994 Rwandan Genocide.

    From Google:

The Woman in White (or the White Lady) is a legendary female ghost dressed in a flowing white gown or bridal wear, whose worldwide appearances are almost universally rooted in tragic tales of lost love, betrayal, or violent death

Some legends portray her as a silent entity, or omen of misfortune.

Others describe encounters where she asks travelers for assistance before mysteriously disappearing.

  • Liminal Astrology (and other tangents) with Sam the Sky Guy

We covered a LOT of ground in the conversation. Sam is fabulous, and both of us have stayed away from socials for the summer, so this was a happy reunion. We were both hyper and giddy by the end.

The first fifteen minutes  of the conversation is a lovefest for our mutual friend, Monique Pliakos. Her work at Innerstandings Hypnosis, and her reiki, are all top-notch, 100% ethical and she and her family are rare-wonderful-authentic-jewels.

The rest of the conversation is a VIBE as they say. And Sam's unwillingness to tackle fixed stars is going to send me back to my friend, Pete the Blue Collar Spiritualist soon, to make sense of Pleiades and those legendary sisters in the sky.

After the mics cut, we wrapped up and caught up a little more. Sam will be back, I promise. He is one of my favorite people.

    Find Sam on Substack here.

Book a reading with Sam by emailing him at [email protected] (and also, feel free to share your experiences with the Mercury/tarot experiment there!

Find Monique Pliakos on Substack here, or Innerstandings Hypnosis business here.

    If you are curious to work with Mercury AND tarot together, here is Sam's gentle guidance;

"Set aside Wednesdays (any time from sunrise to before sunrise Thursday), and Saturday nights (any time after sunset to before sunrise Saturday) for this experiment. You can read for yourself or for others.

    Prior to the reading(s)

    - set your intention to respectfully invite Mercury

    - light a candle: any color, whatever you feel or know to be correct

    - light incense: traditionally frankincense, but could be any scent you associate with sanctity or clarity

    - recite the Orphic hymn to Mercury: https://sacred-texts.com/cla/hoo/hoo32.htm

Do your reading(s) and journal your observations. Clean up your candle and incense after the reading(s). You don't need to banish before or after. This isn't Goetia or anything involving forcing spirits or demons into your service. You are inviting a Celestial who governs magic and tarot. It's not like are forcing Them to show up, then kicking them out of your space when you're done (seriously, please don't try that). Anyway, after several weeks of such ritualized readings, compare and contrast them to your typical readings.

To take this further, explore where Mercury is in your natal chart. Are there any correlations to how Mercury shows up (if at all)."

  • CASCADIA: Shasta Lake & the Displaced

Foggy Seattle mornings are this author's favorite writing companions. I love curling up with a notebook and pen on the couch, cat beside me, dog at my feet, to jot down traces of a dream or a story outline or ideas for the podcast.

This mini-episode was born in that cozy space. As I was researching Mount Shasta, giving the place a fresh deep dive for the new book, I remembered something, Shasta Lake. As we drove past this lake from I-5 I'd watch houseboats peeking out the window like a soldier in a foxhole, wondering how ANYONE could float on that creepy body of water.

In one instance, Dad pulled over where there was a boat launch because someone needed a restroom. A family wearing matching red striped tee shirts loaded supplies onto a boat, and their joy was obvious. To me, it felt like the opening shot of a horror movie, Spielberg-esque, a glimpse of a picture perfect family, set up to lull the viewer into a feeling of safety before it all goes to hell in a hand basket.

Well, I'm not the only one that feels uneasy at the site of Shasta Lake. And recently, someone found a prosthetic leg in the waters. Oh, and if this place doesn't give YOU nightmares, it might after you hear a creepypasta from YouTube about a fisherman that goes missing and claw marks on the side of his abandoned boat.

    Let's get into it!

    Shasta Lake 101

Located in Northern California not far from Redding, it is the state's largest reservoir. A manmade creation between 1935-45 in tandem with the construction of Shasta Dam that spans the Sacramento River, it covers 30,000 acres of what was once a valley.

When Shasta Lake is completely full it can reach depths of 500 feet.

Shasta Lake is known as the 'houseboat capital of the world' and is a water sport playground. Besides fishing, skiing, swimming, and wakeboarding, visitors love exploring the Shasta Lake Caverns and seeing the massive Shasta Dam from the water.

Shasta Lake, a massive manmade reservoir - but what was the valley before it was drowned?
