  • THE FORMULANERDS AWARDS 2022

This week on the Cut to the Race Podcast, it’s Awards Season! - Join Oli, Sam, Abby and James M for the first annual FormulaNerds Season Awards ceremony as they discuss the esteemed nominees across a number of prestigious categories, such as Driver of the Season, Team of the Season and Race of the Season.

Selected from the team at FormulaNerds, the panel vote for – and argue about – who they believe are the deserved winners across the many awards on offer.

Will there be shock winners, will the panel go against the Selection Committee? And most importantly, who will scoop some of the less-storied prizes, such as Mistake of the Season, Most Attractive Car of the Season and even Best National Anthem of the Season?

It’s pop culture references aplenty as the quartet take the edge off and have a drink, just as you would at any awards show.

It’s all part of the fun at the soon-to-be highly acclaimed “Nerdies”. Even the Oscars had to start somewhere…

  • F1 News From the Nerds - Silly Season Team Principal Special!

The FormulaNerds News Team return for a special 'Team Principal Silly Season' episode of News from the Nerds. James is joined by Abby, Oli, Catherine and (eventually a late-to-the-party) Sam to cover the string of announcements this week - some more expected than others - that saw a number of changes amongst F1's team bosses.

    Jost Capito leaves Williams:

Things got underway on Monday as Williams Team Principal Jost Capito announced he was stepping down ahead of the 2023 season, along with Technical Director FX Demaison.

    https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-jost-capito-leaves-williams-racing/

Fred Vasseur moves from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari:

Then came the more expected news of Fred Vasseur leaving Alfa Romeo after almost six years to take the Team Principal role at Ferrari which had been vacated by Mattia Binotto.

    https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-vasseur-leaves-alfa-romeo-and-joins-ferrari/

Andreas Seidl leaves McLaren to become Sauber Group CEO:

But the news which really caught the F1 world by surprise was that of McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl leaving the Woking team to become CEO of the Sauber Group as they begin their transition from Alfa Romeo to Audi for the 2026 season.

    https://www.formulanerds.com/news/mclarens-andreas-seidl-to-take-over-as-sauber-alfa-romeo-boss/

Andrea Stella promoted to McLaren Team Principal:

And that, of course, left a vacant Team Principal role at McLaren which was filled by Andrea Stella, who was promoted from his role as Executive Director with immediate effect.

    • 2022 F1 Season Review & Quiz - Part 2

On this week’s Cut to the Race, Oli is joined by Abby, James and Sam to discuss the top three teams of the 2022 season for part two of the season review. On this show:

      The Nerds Quiz!

Oli provides another quiz for the Nerds focusing on 2022 to test their knowledge of the latest season. How will they do? Can you beat the Nerds?

      An uphill battle for Mercedes:

2022 wasn’t quite what Mercedes would have wanted with a car that was less than perfect. For the Silver Arrows there were many obstacles in the way but they finished on a high in the final races. The quartet talk about Mercedes’ challenging season and the promise of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

      A championship fall for Ferrari:

Ferrari’s season started strong with a place in the championship but it soon went downhill after some blunders, retirements and bad luck. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had varying seasons with highs and lows. The panel dissect exactly what went wrong for the Scuderia.

A double victory for Red Bull:

Red Bull won both championships this year but it wasn’t without its challenges. A double DNF in Bahrain proved futile in hindering Red Bull’s progress and they dominated the season. They had some blunders with the cost cap and team orders but they fought their way to victory. The panel discuss Red Bull’s double victory, the clear difference in Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

      • 2022 F1 Season Review & Quiz - Part 1

This week on the Cut to the Race Podcast, host Oli and his panel of Abby, Sam and James M tackle the first half of the 2022 season review.

In this episode, it’s the bottom seven teams from Constructors’ Championship and their drivers. Who exceeded expectations, who failed to deliver, and what can we expect from their respective 2023s?

        Quiz ’22

This week’s quiz is all things 2022. How closely was the panel paying attention this season, as they try to count everything from drivers to retirements and list the calendar in order?

        The battle for P4

An intense fight between the two was somewhat overshadowed by internal dysfunction. McLaren started terribly, but quickly recovered. Well, half their line-up did, at least… Alpine were quick from the get-go, but were plagued by poor reliability. Well, half their line-up was, at least… Personnel changes for next season will see shifts in team dynamic, but will they continue their fight for best of the rest?

        A tale of two teams

Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin had divergent seasons yet converged at 55 points apiece. Alfa took a step forward, whilst Aston took a step back.

Valtteri Bottas was a revelation Alfa, but how did his rookie teammate fare? A surprisingly slow start for Aston made way for a resurgent Sebastian Vettel, who provided his own summer surprise.

        Did Haas flatter to deceive?

After an abysmal 2021 season, the only way was up for Haas. With Nikita Mazepin sacked during the off-season, Kevin Magnussen shocked and delighted in equal measure with P5 on his return to F1 at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Exciting early season form eventually tailed off, but Mick Schumacher remained costly for the team. KMAG dovetailed the campaign with feel good performances, whilst Schumacher peaked mid-year. That wasn’t enough to save him, as Magnussen’s old foe replaces Mick for 2023.

        Falls from grace

Perhaps the teams most disappointed with 2022 will be AlphaTauri and Williams – though admittedly, that’s to be expected as they finished P9 and P10.

AlphaTauri ran Haas close, but Pierre Gasly was unable to extract as much from the car as he did in previous years. Yuki Tsunoda took a step forward, or so it seemed, but struggled after securing his future for 2023, when Gasly will enjoy pastures new. Can his replacement, Nyck de Vries, deliver on the promise of his Monza cameo?

Williams might have provided that opportunity to De Vries, but it’s Logan Sargeant who has benefitted from a changing of the guard there. He replaces Nicholas Latifi, whose season never really got going. He partners Alex Albon, who was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating season that saw Williams fall back to the foot of the standings.

        • F1 News From The Nerds - 2023 Chinese GP Cancelled, F1 Testing + More!
This week on News from the Nerds, host James M is joined by Abby, Sam and James P as the panel break down the latest developments in the world of F1 in the first show of the F1-post season.

No Bull in a China Shop

It looks like the Chinese Grand Prix will not be returning for 2023. It’s not yet confirmed by F1, but has it been heading this way for some time? Will the round be replaced, and will the calendar be further tweaked to take advantage of these developments?

          https://www.formulanerds.com/news/chinese-grand-prix-to-be-cancelled/

          Testing Times in Abu Dhabi

Your round up of the post-season and young driver tests from Abu Dhabi, where track action didn’t officially cease till the end of Tuesday. Who performed well, and does it tell us anything for 2023?

          https://www.formulanerds.com/news/abu-dhabi-post-season-test-round-up/

Alonso happy at Aston… so far

Fernando Alonso is notoriously difficult to please, but so far, so good for the unlikely partnership between the Spaniard and Aston Martin. He endured a difficult season in 2022, despite looking every bit as quick as he did in his prime. Just how important will a car with better reliability be for him?

          https://www.formulanerds.com/news/alonso-compares-the-aston-martin-to-jaguar-in-2002/

          Hulkenberg looks forward to 2023

Talking of unlikely partnerships, very few would have had Nico Hulkenberg returning to a full-time drive on their F1 bingo card at the start of the year. What will he make of the opportunity after three years in a reserve role?

          F2 and F3 round up

Just as an extended F1 silly season ends, so begin the F2 an F3 driver confirmations. A number of high-profile juniors have switched teams for 2023 already, and who do we fancy for glory next season in the road to F1? It’s also F2 post season testing, so that’s always an indication of where drivers might land…

        • Round 22 - The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Review 2022

This week on the Cut to the Race podcast, Oli is joined by James M, Abby and Sam to discuss the final race weekend of the year - the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

There were mixed emotions throughout the weekend. Whether you were a Lewis Hamilton fan having to relive the events of the previous year, or a fan of any of the four departing drivers (some permanently, some perhaps not) - Daniel Ricciardo, Mick Schumacher, Nicholas Latifi and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Together, the panel discuss the highlights and major talking points, including the confirmation of Nico Hülkenberg's return, Logan Sargeant securing his spot on the grid, and - of course - the on-track action itself.

          https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-haas-announce-second-driver-for-2023/

          https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-logan-sargeant-secures-super-licence-and-f1-seat/

Mercedes were looking to build on their first race win of the season last time out in Brazil, but would they or Ferrari be able to take the challenge to the dominant Red Bull team as Max Verstappen looked for a record-extending 15th win of the season.

And then there was the battle for second in the drivers' title. Charles Leclerc and Sergio Pérez came into the race on exactly the same number of points after the controversy of Verstappen refusing to move aside for his teammate in São Paulo.

          https://www.formulanerds.com/news/perez-on-verstappen-it-shows-who-he-really-is/

But only one would come away with the silver medal and it would prove to be a clever bit of strategy from Ferrari (yes, really) that would make the difference.

          https://www.formulanerds.com/news/strategic-battles-and-emotional-farewells-at-the-abu-dhabi-grand-prix/

The quartet also do the traditional 'national anthem review' for the final time in 2022, before James, Sam and Abby try to answer more obscure questions in Oli's latest crazy quiz.

            Binotto out, Vasseur in?

            Infighting at Red Bull

After the São Paulo Grand Prix, tensions are high within the Red Bull camp despite Max Verstappen now saying he will help Sergio Perez in Abu Dhabi. Jenson Button has also weighed in on the situation saying Red Bull are to blame themselves for the conflict.

            Farewell to Vettel

Abu Dhabi marks the final race in Sebastian Vettel’s career as he is retiring at the end of the season, after an amazing career achieving four championships.

            F2 finale

Formula 2 rounds up it’s season in Abu Dhabi with eyes on Logan Sargeant and his super licence points for Williams, Zane Maloney being promoted to F2 for the weekend and the tight battle between MP Motorsport and ART Grand Prix for the Teams’ Title.
