  • Episode 41: The Voice Of F1 - Crofty

This week on the 'Cut to The Race' podcast, Oli, Callum, Emma, Dan and Michael meet a modern F1 legend.

Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft joins the panel to discuss his thoughts on all things F1 including Daniel Ricciardo's current performance, the 2022 regulations and why Mercedes aren't as dominant as we all expected this year.He also touches upon the subject of Valtteri Bottas and whether he thinks the Finn should be replaced at the end of this year.

We ask him how he handles difficult situations on a race weekend such as Romain Grosjean's horrific accident in Bahrain last year and how he prepares his stats and research for a race weekend. We find out that Crofty is also a darts fan and commentator, and we take him back in time with the FormulaNerds Motorsport Time Machine.

Finally, we test his knowledge in a Nerds first, a quote quiz involving some of Crofty's best lines.

    • Episode 40: The FormulaNerds 2021 Azerbaijan GP Review

This week on the 'Cut to the Race' podcast - Oli, Dan, Matt and Callum sat down to discuss the chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as well as covering key talking points from Monaco and this weeks news.

Valtteri's botched pit-stop was a talking point, as well as Leclerc's short lived sensational pole position. The panel covered the cancellation of the Singapore Grand Prix, and look at alternative venues that could host a race to keep a calendar of 23 races a possibility. Spa also suffered devastating flooding this week, and the panel assess the damage caused, and what will have to be replaced.

As talk turned to Azerbaijan the panel discussed the major talking points, from Bottas' lack of pace (as Dan tried desperately to defend his beloved driver) to another pole position from Charles Leclerc.Of course talk was mainly focussed on the issues with the Pirelli tyres, causing Max Verstappen to lose a certain win, and Lance Stroll to tumble out of the points. Hamilton's lock-up made Oli cry, and the panel gave their race ratings and drivers of the day.

      • Episode 39: The Business of F1 - with Mark Gallagher

On today’s very special episode, Oli and Matt are joined by F1’s best-connected man: Mark Gallagher.

From corporate board rooms, to operations, commentating, and even Hollywood, Mark has done it all. The list of teams and drivers Mark has been involved with is truly staggering. From the likes of Senna, Schumacher,  and Häkkinen, Mark has worked with and been around them all.On the team side Mark worked with Jordan, Jaguar, and subsequently Red Bull.

He founded his own team in Status Grand Prix that competed in GP2, GP3, world endurance and won the A1 Grand Prix in 2009. Oli and Matt are given a brilliant insight to Mark’s perception of drivers like Hamilton and Vettel in the modern age compared to the heroes of old.

Our team gets Mark to open up on the perception of drivers in the social media age. Have we lost some of the ability to TRULY see and know our drivers through modern content creation practices? Are Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel that dissimilar in their mindset when it comes to the fans in their personal lives?

The panel also does a little bit of deep diving into the corporate side of things by comparing Haas and Aston Martin’s way of doing business. From PR, to sponsorships, to financials a little bit of everything is discussed.Lastly, our trio looks at Red Bull vs Ferrari and how the 2022 regulations could hurt or help the teams. Mark gives his predictions for the 2021 season but gives us a fresh new perspective on how teams may or may not be focusing on the future.

              • Episode 35: Verstappen VS Hamilton + The Latest News

This week on the 'Cut to the Race' podcast - Oli, Dan, Matt and Callum sat down to discuss, Imola, Portimao and the news we've missed over the past few weeks.

The panel discuss the Russell/Bottas incident that got everyone talking, and each draw their own conclusions about who was to blame, before moving on to cover the other talking points from the weekend and crediting Lewis Hamilton's incredible comeback drive.

The news over the past fortnight includes F1 heading to Miami, Suzuka extending its contract, Canada being replaced with Turkey, and the news of sprint races. The panel unanimously agreed Suzuka was one of the best circuits on the calendar, but the Turkey/Canada swap caused some discussion, as did the Miami Grand Prix set for 2022 and beyond.Sprint races also divided the panel as some love the idea, and some didn't, but all were in agreement it's nice to see F1 trying something new!

As discussion turned to Portimao the panel all decided to gang up on Dan and laid into Bottas' failed ability to turn a strong pole position into a race win. A track limits debate soon started, and all the panel agreed the actions of car #9 were unacceptable from a Formula 1 driver.Drivers of the day were decided and we now look ahead to the Spanish Grand Prix this coming weekend.
