This week I get the chance to sit down and discuss the voyage of a strength coach with Robb Hornett. After a run-down of how he got to St. Louis we get into what the lessons were in his stop. Each one bringing him a unique point of view and new perspective to help drive him forward. We then talk about the timing of training throughout the week in season, and how setting the schedule more for recovery than for performance has changed his programming. This leads him into a discussion on controlling what you can, and making sure that you are doing the best with what you’re able to control, to be even better for your athletes. We finish off talking about the return to sport after the lay off and some lessons that were taken from this time away, and where our two teams are at the present moment in our preparation and how ready we both are for games to start.

  • Episode 512: My Thoughts Monday #169- Jay DeMayo- My Personal New Year’s Resolutions
“Don’t wait until you’re 40, jaded, grey, tired all the time, and kind of beaten and worn down looking if I look at myself in the camera right now, to sit here and start this because the most powerful thing in the world is compounding interest.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. A year ago, this time, who would have thought we would be where we are now? Not me, that’s for sure. But looking back on 2020, it has been a year of a ton of growth for me, and because of this, it has made me ask some different questions and really refocus on where I am personally. I’ve tried to continue to challenge myself, and push boundaries. This has led to some things that I am going to try to do differently to be better, and one of those is to write down and share my new year’s resolutions. It’s only two things, but I think that these will really help me continue to grow and become a better all-around person, plus hold me accountable to it putting it online. Those are: read (and invest in) 10 pages a day minimum, and pay myself first.

  • Episode 511: Outside The Rack #70- Steve Schween
“You can’t just be the guy who just yells at people.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 70th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by The Strength & Conditioning Coach at Cienega High School, Steve Schween. Schween, thanks for being with us today.

Before we start, who is Steve Schween?
I’m a former New Yorker, who moved to AZ, checked Max Preps to find where I wanted to work and took some unique steps to get a job there.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career?
Figuring out that being a “football coach” didn’t work, and how much being vulnerable has had a positive impact on his relationships with the kids.

    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
When does this “new time” end?

    3) What’s your escape?
    Reading, cooking, and travel

“We get ourselves in trouble because we try to train the sport in the weight room when in reality we’re training movements in the weight room.”

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down and discuss training transfer and monitoring the training process with Dr. Tim Suchomel. After a run down of how he got up to Carroll University, Tim starts discusses where the confusion on what actually “transfer” means and how sees how it can actually show up. He then runs down the rabbit hole of how they evaluate their athlete’s and have built their “model” for what their best athletes have looked like. This drives training decisions, and has been helpful in identifying outliers and how they’re either exceptional at one specific aspect of their sport or where they need to find ways to improve. We finish off discussing the process of building these athlete profiles, what some roadblocks where in this process, and how it is continuing to evolve as their ability to collect and apply data expands.
