  • Episode 516: My Thoughts Monday #171- Jay DeMayo- Has the Pendulum Swung Too Far…Again?
“If we are being entrusted for the physical preparation of the student athletes, or of the young people we get to work with, shouldn’t we allow the coaches, and shouldn’t we provide them the trust to develop the special preparation for their athletes?”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this week’s Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com

In our world of sport performance there have been multiple pendulum swings. From the Olympic lifts, to Husker Power, to functional training, the list goes on and on. One that has been most active of late is the importance of specificity. In this week’s My Thoughts Monday I share some of the reflecting I have been doing of late when it comes to programming, and why I think we may have gone too far down the “specific” rabbit hole, and why this may be one of the things limiting us as a profession by preventing us to develop a true “role” in sport.

  • Episode 514: Episode 270- Jason Crutchfield- Task Specificity of Mental Toughness and Your Training
“I need them to perform on Saturday’s, and I can’t get them to perform on Saturday’s if I break them on Monday.”

“You can’t just throw somebody into a situation without any prior training and then say, “well if you didn’t do it well you’re just not mentally tough.” No that just doesn’t work.”

“Trying to grossly apply mental toughness to specific situations makes for broken athletes.”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. This week I get the opportunity to discuss the misconceptions of the role of military training with Jason Crutchfield. After quick run down of how he got into coaching we discuss what his role was in the military and how that has impacted his outlook as a coach, including what training for OCS (Officer Candidate School) is like and some of the mistakes people make when they look at that type of training. He then dives into the ideas of maximum capacity threshold that they experienced in the Marine vs the minimum effective dose he tries to implement with his athletes. He then dives down the “mental toughness” rabbit hole, and where he see’s people being confused with what they do in the military and how it’s in team sports. Make sure to give him a follow on instagram @speed_coach1.

Sense we were kids we were taught to color inside the lines. In this week’s My Thoughts Monday Molly Binetti discusses the idea of staying inside the lines as a strength coach. Living up to the assumptions of what we “are” or how we are supposed to act may be what is holding us back from moving forward. Molly shares with us some of the issues that she sees with the lack of education and professional standards, which leads her to giving us an example and a possible solution to help us to continue to push our great field forward.
