  • Episode 521: My Thoughts Monday #174- Jay DeMayo- The Confusion Around Aerobic Exercise
“If we’re going to say, and we’re going to mean, that we are trying to provide the minimal effective dose, and we are trying to pick the low hanging fruit off the tree first then what we can’t do is take the simplest, easiest, least stressful forms of activity and say ‘we will never do that’.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this weeks Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I chime in on a recent discussion I saw on strength coach Twitter, the utilization of aerobic exercise in physical preparation programs. Aerobic work, practically long duration aerobic work, has been looked down upon as a means to improve sport performance, and I feel this is a mistake. There are many situations where low end “cardio” is actually the best choice for an athlete. This really exposes the underlying problem, that we try to make too many blanket statements about training, a subject that we also say shouldn’t have a cookie cutter approach and that we need to go after the “low hanging fruit”. Instead we throw out one of the least stressful means and method we could utilize that can provide the greatest overall impact in their ability to perform at practice and in competition. I think that’s a mistake.

  • Episode 520: Outside The Rack #75- Ashleigh Beaver
“Before I can accomplish most of my goals and what I need to do I need them to trust me as well, so how is my relationship and relationship building with these coaches different then it was before?”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 75th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the Assistant Sports Performance Coach for Women’s Basketball at Duke University, Ashleigh Beaver. Ashleigh, thanks for being with us today.

Before we start, who is Ashleigh Beaver?
Ashleigh is a lot of people, but first and foremost I’m just Ashleigh who’s here to do her best to inspire you to be better.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career?
Going from being in a situation where I had multiple teams to going to one where I had one and being more than the “weight room person.”

    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?
Where do we go when we can’t hold people accountable?

    3) What’s your escape?
Going home to see my family, traveling, and cooking.

“So often in life we look at things as binary, black or white. In reality, there is not a single thing that’s black or white, and if you have a black or white mentality I’d really love to hear how your COVID has gone.”

I had the pleasure of discussing the importance of thinking outside the preverbal box, just just in training but how we look at our entire world of coaching, with Ali Kershner. After a quick run down of how she got back out to Palo Alto, we get into her time and Kansas. This discussion includes a different perspective on the role of a mentor, and how learning from one of the trial blazers and most recognized coaches in the world leads to some trying scenario for young coaches who are trying to make their mark. We then discuss the role of autonomy, the misconceptions of it, and why it may be even more important that ever in this COVID world we are trying to navigate. We finish off discussing her latest project, “Ride The Grey” a podcast that she and Travis Knight discuss different topics and their relation to our field. Check them out on Apple Podcasts here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ride-the-grey/id1527817399.

Throughout this unique time we have been going through there were bound to be some bad things that happened in sports because of the time away, we all knew this. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I talk about how there are two ways people are addressing this, trying to look at information and do better when the athletes start back in the spring after another lay off, and those who are just providing unsolicited advice about what people need to be doing. Using this time to point fingers at people is really disappointing and just attacking coaches at our weakest point, and that is the anxiety many coaches have when it comes to their professional stability. We need to be better than this
